I lost one of my birds this weekend due to a sudden sensor failure with the GY 601. I was flying along minding my own business when all of a sudden it started doing mad pirouttes. I was only about 30 feet high and coming out of a sharp turn, so it was in a pretty steep bank. I made an attempt to get it upright and sorted out, but it was a lost cause so I just hit hold and watched it crash.

Upon inspection, there weren't any obvious problems with the tail rotor and the servo worked fine. But then when I was moving the remains, I noticed the servo didn't move. So I plugged in the sensor for another 601 and it worked fine. I plugged the original sensor back in and there was no response to yaw inputs, although the servo did respond to stick inputs.

Is there any point in sending the gyro to Hobby Services? Since the 601 has been discontinued will they just tell me that it's not repairable and that I need to buy a new 611? Does anybody have a 601 sensor they'd like to part with for cheap?

Send it in. If it's unrepairable they will offer to sell you a new gyro at less than the street price.
