View Full Version : High spot on the clutch liner

It feels like there is a high spot on my clutch liner. When I installed it, it appeared to have a rough spot, and that might be it. I didn't attempt to fix it because I figured it would break-in anyway. Even so, it spun freely by hand before I installed everything.

It's certainly not grabbing hard, but when I rotate the main gear by hand, I can feel the resistance as the clutch bell spins around to the high spot.

Will this break-in with use? Or do I need drop the engine and rework the liner? Note that I haven't tried starting it yet... still building it.

I just replaced a clutch pack on mine and the pack had a new liner in the bell. It didnt spin very freely and I was concerned. I asked around and was told that it would break in, it could take as many as 20 flights for it to be as free as the old one. I've done a couple of mild hover tanks in the yard and its already freed up alot.

Hi Mark

This should wear in in short order. But if you want to check it look for two things. First: there should be .012" difference between the I.D of the bell and the O.D. of the clutch. Second: make sure that the gap between your fan hub and clutch driver is even all the way around. Any uneven-ness between the fan hub and driver will result in quick damper wear and extra force on the clutch assembly which can cause binding.
