If my Tx has a 3 point curve and I made my throttle curve to be 0-50-100, is this the same as setting it to 0-25-50-75-100 in a Tx with a 5 point curve (assuming expo is 0). How important is a 5 point curve when you are just starting to learn? I would like to jump into heli and maybe get a T-rex 450 S or SE but to cut cost I would like to use my old Tx. What other Tx functions are required when you are just starting to hover? Thanks.

Yes

Not very, The more points on the curve the more you can dial in your machine.

Make sure your radio can handle the swash type of the heli your looking to get. The more options the transmitter has, the more likely it will work with what ever your flying. But as a starting point most computer radio's will work fine.
Just keep one thing in mind.... keeping the cost down is more of a dream than a reality. :)

With most of my helis I set the top and bottom and be done with it.
Linear pitch from -10 to +10 and let the governor run the motor at my desired RPM.

The only place I use a 5 (actually 7 for me with the 9303) is the normal throttle curve. And that just to get it spooled up.
Everything else I INH (inhibit) the mid points.
So Normal Pitch curve is 40 - 50 - 100
Idle Up pith curve is 0 - 50 - 100
Idle Up throttle curves are 100 - 90 - 100 and 100 - 100 - 100
