View Full Version : port 9000-9005 problems?
Is anyone else having problems with the ports that Phoenix multiplayer uses?
9000-9005
I understand that you can forward those ports to your router, so that they become accessible, but the router that was provided when I got my internet is apparently setup in "brigde" mode, so that I cant configurate it.
I can also imagine that people who are not very familiar with network-tweaking could have problems forwarding these ports.
Would it be possible for phoenix to use other ports already opened as standard on most routers? (8080 and 80 are always open i think. there must be others too)

networking is far from my strong point. your best bet is to drop phoenix an email they are fast and efficient.

Yes, I did that.
I tryed to reach the interface of my router (talk with my router), but because of its setup, i cant. SO: i can imagine the possibility of other people having similar problems.
AND even if their problem is solvable, they could have networking as a weak point like some others.
So, I hope that they change the ports, using some common open ports instead of 9000-9005.
*toes and fingers crossed*
(i have tryed to join sessions at least 10 times per day since the release of multiplay )

Who is your provider and what make is your modem/router.There is always a backdoor to get in if needed
my DSL modem is a Speedstream 5100. I think its made by Siemens.
(but if other ppl than me are having those problems, i would rather wait until they change the ports of Phoenix. Not all people have the technological insight)

In bridge mode you don't have to forward anything (it acts like a modem instead of a router).
You probably have a firewall installed on your computer that needs to be configured to open the ports. If you're using Nortons or anything else, post which anti-virus/firewall software you're using. If it's the standard XP firewall, add phoenix.exe to the exceptions.

Maybe a dumb question, I should Know this. But with Windows Vista where do I find the firewall setting.
I talked with my internet provider.
The router is NOT setup in bridge mode.
BUT they had locked off the user-interface, so that i cant do any portforwarding.
And (i dont know why) they refused to give me instructions on how to unlock it, and also refused to fiddle with it themselves.
In any other country, i would have chosen to use another internet provider instead, but I live in Greenland. We only have 1. lol
It also seems that I can not just order a DSL modem/router. I was told that they "programmed" every single router before handing them out. Setup MDP codes etc.
So, im probably be one of the only people NOT being able to play phoenix multiplayer UNLESS the phoenix team changes the ports and uses common ports instead.

Using common ports won't help I'm afraid. Multiplayer games don't work in the same manner as web-browsing etc, mainly because they use UDP packets to reduce overhead and latency. Web browsing works without forwarding since you request a packet and wait for it to arrive (you occasionally get time-outs and have to try again). Games can't afford to wait for things to time out (or even the TCP comms overhead) so they just work with what they get in whatever order it arrives. Your router therefore needs to know what to do with packets that weren't specifically requested by your computer.
UPnP is a possible work-around, which basically allows an application to forward the ports it needs for itself. The problem is it's relatively new and not all routers support it (or have it disabled by default).
EDIT: Your ISP probably doesn't want you running a website from your PC or is trying to limit P2P traffic. Only reasons I can think of for not letting you forward ports on the router.

Glad to see you have had some luck getting things going, even though not to the full extent yet

I am sort of having the same problem. Every time I try to join with CAM I cause his Phoenix to shutdown. When I create a session he can't see me at all. Same Speedstream 5100 modem and a router. I was able to forward the ports in the router and the modem. I've been able to fly with only 2 sessions created by others. But once I rebooted my computer it stopped me from connecting again.
I have Norton Antivirus, do you think it could be preventing my connection? This is the first time I've tried this port forwarding thing so I'm kinda lost here.

I have just discovered that Windows Vista and XP service pack 2 have a firewall that has to be modified for Phoenix.exe and/or port forwarding. I will find out when I get home. :arggg:
