I'm procrastinating at work daydreaming looking out my window at a lake behind our building and I get to wondering: can I use my DX6i on a RC boat? It seems like cars and boats use "surface" transmitters with a steering wheel. Is there a reason for that? Ideally I'd like to keep my inventory down to one TX and one kind of battery (3S 2200 mAH). I also have 1S but I don't think that would power much of a boat.

But technically speaking is there a difference between a surface TX/RX and an air TX/RX? The purchase will be more palatable to wife if I can say, "But honey, see, it uses the same transmitter!" :)

back in the days of fm ( lol love being able to say that only because I am only 21 lol) it was more of a respect thing or maybe faa requirement for their to be a separate channels for air, water, and land their for different tx and rx.... but with 2.4ghz were all on the same channel so really their is no difference any more only that most surface tx/rx only use dsm and not dsm2 like what we use.

You can do it. Just google it there are videos, still it is better to just get a standard pistol style radio. Then no problems with setup.
