Hi all,

I seem to have problems with my stock 40A speed controller.
And i suspect i use the wrong setting somewhere.
My headspeed is not stable in a hover, it cuts sometimes or goes faster or slower.
I only hovered in normal mode till now, no idle-up.
There is also a text-error in the thunder tiger speed controller manual (governor settings) so I'm not really sure how many beeps i have to set to turn it off or on, i want it off for now.

Could someone please advice me the best settings to use with the stock controller and motor.

This is how it's setup:

battery protection: light discharge protection(1st. 3.2V 2nd.2.9V)
motor timing: auto timing
brake mode: No brake
Throttle sensitivity: standard throttle response
flying mode: (here's the printing error)helicopter mode withhout governor (beeps set : IIIII-II)

Thanks in advance

Eric

Hi EricW,

Had the same problem, with mine. I found switching the governor on made all the difference (which you seem to have done!) .

You have to be careful with your throttle curves, when in governor mode though.

I've attached a URL to a picture of the instructions with the relevant correction.

Not sure I've helped much, but the governor mode and throttle curves made all the difference with me.

Hi,
I also have the stock ESC and brushless motor. I don't have her finished yet but I have also seen the printing error and was wondering about it.

The assumption I have is that I don't need to re-program it as it came with the kit it should be properly pre-programmed.

Hope someone can shed some light on this?

/Erland.

Erm. so i suppose the stock esc works better in governor mode?

I'm a real newbie to this, but I found playing around with the ESC settings and throttle curves had a huge effect on the Heli performance and flight times.

I'm noting down each time I change the ESC settings and have found that the governor mode certainly helps with my hovering. There are loads of threads on the runryder site about the stock ESC, seems that there isn't a definitive answer.

Let us know what you find.

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks for all reponse,

I'll check out those threads on runryder and when i find a setting that makes it work i'll let you know asap.
The weather is nice, so enough time to test

I didnt change anything in the stock ESC's settings and it works fine. One thing that I found to have a big effect on steady rotor speed is the quality of LIPO that you are using. If you are using a very old or cheap lipo and suffering from unstable head speed try a new one. EVO20's and TP's seem to work well but anything with a good C rating and above 1800ma should be fine.

Hi,

Thanks, but can't be it, flew it yesterday with a brandnew EVO25 2170 Mah flightpower 3s pack.
I changed the settings because my LHS assured me it had to be set first.
Wish i left it as it was though, now i have to fiddle with it, and read some more :).

Eric.

Hi all,

Just back from two packs in the park (2 minute walk )
With the normal throttle curve the Headspeed still was doing funny things right after startup.
Must be the governer that kicks in at a certain percentage?.
So i held my breath gave some more pitch and switched to idle-1(first time IRL) with the flat 85% curve.

Flies like a dream (like the SIM actually)!!
Even at 85% it has enough pop for me at this stage(real beginner).
Did some impressive climbs out there, just great.
I want more Lipos!!! :D

My (problem) setup:

Mini titan with stock ESC and motor on a futaba FF8/8US and a pcm receiver.
- battery protection: light discharge protection(1st. 3.2V 2nd.2.9V)
- motor timing: auto timing
- brake mode: No brake
- Throttle sensitivity: standard throttle response
- flying mode: (There's a printing error in the manual)2x helicopter mode with/without?? governor, but i set my beeps to : IIIII-II

Working setup:

- battery protection: light discharge protection(1st. 3.2V 2nd.2.9V)
- motor timing: standard timing
- brake mode: no break
- Throttle sensitivity: quick throttle
- flying mode: governor mode (for correcting manual content: thanks MrKev and usherwdp for the link)
correction:
Airplane mode IIIII - I
Helicopter with governor IIIII - II
Helicopter without governor IIIII - III

Found this posted by Eco8gator and use it now (thanks for that too)
Throttle:
0 in throttle hold
0-100 curve in normal mode
85(all the way across) in idle 1 (general flying and hovering)
100(all the way across) in idle 2 (3D power)

Nice flying

Nice one,

I've just upgraded my gyro to a GY401... Wow what a differance, that tail is solid!!!!

Could you let me know the pitch curves you used in normal and i1 please?

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Great choice!, also got a GY401.
More expensive but so much better compared to my walkeraDF60 Gyro, this one is realy temperature sensitive compared to the 401.
Never considered to use it on the Mini-Titan though.

My pitch curves are pretty basic:
Normal mode: 30-52-74-87-100, resulting in -3 / +5 / +10 degr. on my pitchgauge.
idle-1 mode: 0-25-50-75-100, resulting in -10 / 0 / +10 degr. on my pitchgauge.
idle-2 mode: 0-25-50-75-100, resulting in -10 / 0 / +10 degr. on my pitchgauge.

Second flight i forgot to switch back to normal mode and started up in idle-1 :?
No problem at all actualy, the build-in softstartfunction is working very well.
But i flipped the throttle hold switch, switched to normal, spinned to midstick in normal and still on he ground switched to idle-1 again.
All very smooth.
I think i'll be using the normal mode only for spinning up the blades in the future.

Eric,

Thank you. Good luck

Hi all,

Is it normal I have to put more Ma's back in a pack when it's hot/warm outside??
I notice a big difference in drain, have to go back from 6 Min to 5 Min of flight now.

Btw.
Changed my normal throttle curve a bit to smooth out the step to Idle-1.
0-35-70-85-100
see what this brings

Eric
