Hey guys!

For someone about to try their first auto.... What's a good height to try the first one from? Is it better to have plenty of altitude to recover if things go bad? Or is it easier and less intimidating to do at a lower altitude????

What bird?

Driven Tail?

Practiced on simulator?

Enquiring minds want to know

Brady -

I would suggest the following my friend.

Lift the EB up into a 2 - 3 foot stationary hover and hit hold. Learn how the collective management is needed to keep the headspeed and float down as you cushion with pitch. I would probably do this a few time at higher altitiudes up to 6 - 8 feet. You will find the higher you go the faster you need to descend and react on the pitch to soften nicely.

Then do some lower approaching autos with a flair and adding pitch.

Once you have the feel you can go up to 100 feet or whatever and get r done.

Caution: If you do not have a driven tail make sure you auto into the wind to help keep the tail where you want it.

thanks for the advice. I'm not sure I'm up to trying it just yet. I barely dare to fly in the kind of wind we've been having right now, but I think it's time to start practicing so I can do it in the case of an emergency.

Be sure to check your radio and see if you have a special pitch curve for Throttle Hold. If you do, make sure you set it the way you want it. Make sure it's not your normal pitch curve and you have enough negative pitch.

Hi Brady,

I think that rkeith2's suggestion about flipping throttle hold from a low hover is a good place to start right now. If you're not totally comfortable with forward flight and getting the model up and away from you, I don't think I'd try that just yet.

Iperagallo has a good point on the pitch curves in throttle hold. If you're going to try the throttle hold from a hover, you'll need to match the collective curves in whatever flight mode you're hovering in with those in throttle hold. You should be able to flip the hold switch with the throttle stick in whatever position you hover at and "not" have the collective move. That way, you won't be hit with any suprises when you flip the switch. You can set the top end collective to a much positive as you can mechanically get in hold mode. That will give you better cushioning when you land. Just make sure that none of the controls are binding at full collective before you fly.

Good luck,
Steve R.
