View Full Version : Are boom strikes possible with normal blades?

Is it normal to get a boom strike when flying if you over-correct?
I have a CP2, and have put on the superskids, CNC head, and plasti-blades - I did move in 1 hole on the servos -
It flies so much easier now. The plasti-blades are heavy, but really seem to have made the thing a ton more stable.
However, last night I over-corrected and really moved the stick too far to the left, and the thing just mulched itself in the air - the plasti-blade hit the boom, shattered the boom and frame, and then came crashing down in a tangled mess.
I imagine a wood blade would not have caused this damage, but would it have even hit the boom, or is this b/c of the flexibility of the plasti-blades?
Should it ever be able to hit the boom when flying?

The plasiblades flex too much, they are great for hovering practice, even FF, but do cause boom strikes during hard maneuvers.

I have hit my woodies on the boom in a hard landing before. Every thing on my BCP is stock but the heavy duty skids.

Both are correct, I corrected for a "dumb" stick movement on my part, and I to had a boom strike in the air. buried itself like a mole!!!!!!! :mrgreen: I to was using plastic blades in FFF. :arggg:

Yes I have had a couple of boom strikes with the stock blades. Only because they weren't tight enough in the blade grips. But I did not shatter boom it was usually the blades that suffered. Also, having a horizontal fin helps with taking some of the impact.

Yep...It's definitely possible....
I had my first boom strike with the stock symmetrical woodies the other day while I was attempting to approximate a piro flip. The woodies combined with the plastic head have quite a bit of flex.

cmauze, did your boom strike occur in the air just due to hard maneuvering, or did the heli hit the ground? I think the original poster was asking whether it's possible to have boom strikes in the air, whereas some of the responses are talking about boom strikes due to hard landings. I'm fine with a boom strike being possible on a ground impact, but I don't like the idea that I could get a boom strike just maneuvering around in the air.

I had my impact(s) in the air. One was just a "pop" and then I saw some blade covering depart the aircraft, the other was more serious and cause the blades to fold.
Again, this was during a pretty aggressive (for a Blade CP, anyway) cyclic stir.

I was simply doing a hover, and probably over-corrected when I had my mid-air strike;
I wish there was a plastic blade that had a lattice of carbon-fiber or something inside of it to lighten it up and provide some rigidity...

hmmm... i'm not really sure, i think if you have the dampening good and tight enough, i don't think you can get a boomstrike in midair... i've done really ugly flips with mis-timed collective and no boomstrike. i've stirred the stick 1/4 of teh way during a stationary roll (due to tail not holding) so i was amost at the corner, adn i didn't get a boom strick, i've done ummm... 180 degree sideway 'tic tocs'? just rolling to inverted and back to upright the other way... and it was good, i dun really know about woodies as i've almost always flown with cf blades, i think the woodies are lighter, however, does give more flex...
