View Full Version : Lepton Ideal 5S Setup...

I’m trying to put together the “ideal performing” Lepton 5S setup. Any and all insight/guidance is appreciated.

I’m leaning heavily towards the Kontronic Kora motor series and Kontronic Jazz series speed controllers. I’m a precision sport / medium capability 3D pilot and would like a motor setup that has great power with minimal to no bogging tendencies (if that combination exists).

Though I haven’t flow a Lepton yet, I’m envisioning I’ll be using head speeds in the 2600 to 3000 RPM range (depending on idle-up position selected).

I know there are different combinations of Kora motor (Kv rating), ESC and pinion to arrive at my head speed goals but I do not understand why one would choose one motor/pinion combination over another (possibly based on Kv, efficiency and/or lack of tendency to bog under strain?).

One knowledgeable person recently told me the Kora 15-12 w/19T pinion is the way to go. I've read elsewhere that the Kora 15-16 is the motor to go with. VERY confusing.

Any guidance (based on real-world experience or knowledge) of the different combinations and their pros & cons is most appreciated.

Kora 15-10 - 1080 Kv
Kora 15-12 - 920 Kv
Kora 15-14 - 790 Kv
Kora 15-16 - 690 Kv

Pinion size range: 18-26 ?

Regarding ESC, which of the Jazz units is better suited to my needs and why?

Regarding batteries, I have access to ThunderPower Extreme 5S batteries through work. Based on your knowledge of the Lepton, is the following TP Extreme battery compatible and a good fit (both physically and in terms of performance/flight duration)?

TP Extreme - TP3850-5SX - 3850mAh 5-Cell - 496g - 37 H x 48 W x 148 L

If you have any suggestions regarding a better 5S battery for my needs, please let me know. If the Flight Power 5S battery is the better choice, let me know why.

Thanks in advance to all those who reply.

I think you are extremely close to the max batt thickness you can use. Be carefull here...

Kora 15-16 is no use. I think 15-12 is a good choice. You will need 19-20T pinion for the 3000 rpm range.

I use 4S on my side with the 15-12. So i can only guess.

I really liked the Hacker A30-12XL. Runs the stock 24 tooth pinion so no extra pinion is needed. With 3300-3700mah 5S1P flightpower packs it is a rocketship.
With the Jazz 55-10-32 at 75% you will have 3000 rpm headspeed. I even ran it up to 85% for 3150 rpm. Talk about fun!
That setup can be seen in these videos. Exact same thing I ran in mine.

Best part is that the motor, packs and esc are barely warm after a flight.

Dude, do exactly what mudbogger suggests. A30-12XL, 24T, 5S 3700 pack, full gy501/9254 and 3 x 9650's on cyclic. I cannot see how it could possibly get any more powerful or better. Requires some frame mods for the servos (all of them) but totally worth it.

Thanks for the info...very impressive setup and video.

Yep if your going 5S then that motor looks to perform better than the Hyperion 3025-12. I didnt care for that hyperion motor on 5S 3300 packs.

I'd go for the -14 if you want to be able to run 4s or a lower voltage for some other reason (A123/emoli) For 5s and the -14 you want a 21T revco pinion. If you're gonna use 5s only I'd get the -16 but I don't know exactly which pinion to use. It should be somewhere around 24T if I remember correctly. Keep in mind the 5s3700 flightpower pack fits in the frames PERFECTLY (35MM/48MM/150MM). The extra 2mm of the Thunderpower packs may make them not fit. My FP5s3700 packs fit the frames fairly tightly in the height department.

Honestly, if you can get it, the Kora 25-10W ought to be an even better motor but I've yet to find it anywhere.

Has anyone used 5S4350 packs. I assume 5S3700 packs would be more ideal.
I also have the hyperion 3025-10 turn motor - I assume I would need a different motor for 5S. Also, will the align 75amp speed controller work for the 5S setup - I am currently using it with the 4S setup,
Thanks,
Jeff

The align esc is good to 6s. Honestly the lepton is a fatty on 5s3700. I have to use some aftermarket landing gear just to support the extra weight. I can't imagine how it would feel with some huge cells like that. I've found that I really like the 20T pinion with the -14 on 5s. It's not as powerful but then the flight times are longer. I didn't care for the extra crack and 5min flights. I'm not saying it sucks on the 20T just less crack.

When I say the 5s3700's fit perfectly I mean it. I put some heatshrink on my packs and that made them a tiny bit bigger. Enough so that they are a tight fit in the frames.

Kora 15-14, 19t, evo 5s 3700's.

7:30 flight times with Awesome power.

less than 80% out of packs

5S 3700 is HEAVY.... 5S 3300 is a better fit and weight.

Bob,

Yes, the 3300s are lighter but does their capacity cause a reduction in flight time when compared to the 3700s?

Not compared to 4S!
5S is higher voltage and thus less current draw. So 3300 ma 5S gives actually more time than 3700 4S.

Sup. Bob.
How long are your fights with the 3300's?
What motor and pinion?

Well my Lepton is still 4S. My buddies is 5S and he gets about 1 minute more flight time that I do. I get 5 minutes with my flying style on 4S, Hyperion 3025-10 with 23T pinion.

Cool. Thanks Bob.
I have not tried the 3300's but I am very satisfied with the 3700's. Flight times are the longest of my elecric fleet and probably even the most powerfull performer of the fleet. It still flies light and does not seem heavy. Autos are nice too. I am very satisfied with this set up.

Just wanted to add that I've been finally able to fly my lepton a lot lately and I've settled on 20T kora 15-14 and 5s3700 with +/-10. I really like this setup. It's pretty hard to bog it but it's still quick. In Idle 2 I'm spinning around 3100 rpm. normal is about 2500 and idle 1 is around 2700. Idle 1 is where I fly the most but it is fun to bump it to 2 every now and again. I was running the 21T but switched back when I learned my h/s was around 3400 rpm :WOW Anywho I got my bird tuned to have no vibes at that h/s so at only 2700 it flies like a dream.

At one point I had 3400rpm and +14 degrees of pitch and the logictech 6100 was able to hold the tail. That gyro is amazing. With that setup my lepton was a rocketship on punchouts. The speed actually scared most at the field

Hi, i have that exact same setup in my HDX500 and the motor and ESC are getting real hot, i dont have the fan installed yet (i orderd it) would the fan make any difference?? i have the CC80 esc and at 85% im only getting 2600rpm..

The fan makes a big diffrence on the motor temps. As for the esc I can't say. The Jazz was as cold as ice after flights on mine. May want to adjust the timing and other settings.

should be sweeet :D
