View Full Version : Futaba 9C can flip between 72Mhz and 2.4?

My assumption with the XPS modules is that the exisiting 72Mhz antenna does not need to be removed, as the 2.4 module should not be making a connection to it. I want to flip modules in and out so I can fly my planks with their exisitng 72Mhz receivers, but switch to the XPS 2.4 when flying a Trex.

Can someone confirm that the 9C will work properly doing this module shuffle, and that you do NOT need to remove the original antenna?

Thanks,

Smokinjoe

The XPS manual says not to use the XPS module with the original metal antenna in place:

"The stock metal transmitter antenna MUST be removed. Nearly all transmitter antennas simply unscrew. If your transmitter has a pivot ball on top that the antenna normally screws into, do not screw in the antenna when the XtremeLinkTM RF module is installed."

Thanks.

Does anybody know why that is? It seems that with an integrated antenna in the 2.4 module, there would be no connection to the existing antenna.

Because XPS states in the instructions to remove the original antenna from the radio.

As for the 9C it takes less than 30 seconds to remove the antenna or install it. So should not be too difficult to do either one.

Thanks David,

I feel like an idiot. I really did not know that it just unscrewed. No big deal now!

Question about the XPS module in the 9C: With that little stub antenna pointing out the backside, can you set the radio down without striking the tip or is it short enough that the top handle still contacts the tabletop?

I saw a picture in some thread on rcg and the antenna was touching the tabletop and the handle was in the air.
So it seems it is not short enough.
Once I receive mine I'll post again to confirm.

Three reasons to remove the antenna:

a) It is an FCC requirement
b) It can interfere with the performance of the 2.4GHz antenna
c) The manufacturer says this is required for safe operation of the equipment

The stubby antenna on the module protrudes slightly further than the Tx handle. It has been made strong enough to handle expected usage with this in mind. All reports from users so far are that having seen/handled it themselves, they are not concerned. Look forward to hearing what you think when you get yours.

I know it won't bother me because I leave the Tx to stand up so that it collects less dust ;)
Still waiting for the mail ... hope it gets before the weekend.

The stub touches , but it's not a problem.

Hmm, IIRC in the JR 9303 it doesn't touch. :)

But it seems to be a market for slightly longer handles.

Which FCC regulation requires removal of the antenna?

JD of XPS said that it was part of the FCC requirements, I don't know if that is or is not correct.

That explains it then. LOL
Along with the other things said.

Actually probably part of the FCC acceptance testing required the Tx antenna removal to pass.

He said REQUIREMENT, not REGULATION. Different things.
