Just a quick query has anyone tried to run Phoenix on Ubuntu or other Linux flavours? Just trying Ubuntu out and would love to be able to fly without having to reboot.

Phoenix, like all heavy graphics programs, needs plenty of CPU and video performance. I assume Ubuntu is a virtual OS running Windows under Linux. If so, I would not expect it to work very well, if at all.
However, please try it and report back your findings. We all like more options in life.

Ubuntu is not running Windows under Linux.
Its a complete OS of its own (freesource of course).
The filesystem etc. are very different from Windows, so Im not sure that it'll run Phoenix. Its also a little difficult finding the appropriate graphics-drivers for Ubuntu.
(other than that, im very impressed. My first bootup in Ubuntu, and everything just worked, including sound and internet. Firefox and Openoffice are integrated in Ubuntu).
You might need a Linux port for Phoenix to run it in Ubuntu.
Good luck.

I think I read on some forum that Phoenix doesn't use OpenGL for graphics, but needs DirectX. This means that it will not run on Linux. There's a petition on RCGroups forum for Phoenix to bring out a Linux version, but unless there's really many of us I doubt if they will do it. :(

I know this is an old thread but have some phoenix / linux news.
The stand alone version of the Phoenix server runs perfectly in Linux but as it is a windows program you have to use Wine to run it. Not sure about other linux distros but for Ubuntu or any debian distro it is just a case of installing Wine using "sudo apt-get update" then "sudo apt-get install wine". open the installer using wine and it should install and put an icon on your desktop
give it a go, its much more secure than windows.
I have installed this on a seperate server and log into it on the lan from my windows machine. Its called Dragonflies if you fancy checking it out.
