You do not need to dial indicate ANY helicopter but it is highly recommenced no matter WHAT helicopter you fly. ;)

what is "dial indicating"?

Dial indicating is the same as "checking the run-out" of the fan or the clutch. You're basically making sure that the clutch and fan run in perfect circles and don't "wobble". My Freya Evo needed to have the runout checked real bad, I could get up to .005" runout either way (.01" total) and I worked it down to .002" by carefully rotating the fan hub on the collet.

How do you get it to run better then? Do you have to do some grinding?

Ummm Raptor Hirobo and Gohbee DO need dial indicating. You might be surprised just how much these units can be off. Especially the tip of the clutch on the Hirobo.

I dial indicated my Raptor fan and it did make it run a lot smoother. Do you "need" to do it? No.
A dial indicator will tell you how "out of round" something is. When you mount a fan to a motor shaft the odds of you getting it "dead on" are about ZERO (No matter what a manufacturer tells you) ;)
I do not have an indicator myself but I have lots of friends with one :D

One of the best indicators that you need to indicate something is to look for foam in the fuel tank....

You can bet there is going to be a huge rash of peeps looking for alot of answers, especially those who have never ran or built a nitro before, it is a "MUCH DIFFERENT" world than the 600 Electric version, much more involved in the mechanics and tuning of it to perform correctly indeed. Align has always been able to attract people with low costs and decent helis, I am sure the 600N will be the same however I would not say the N version will be as "new rc hobbiest" friendly that is for certain.

That may be the case but it has already been reported on another forum that the 600N presales have already passed the existing 600 sales. Judging by the reports coming in from the fun flys it's looking to be the "hot" heli. I would not be at all surprised if this thing dwarfs the existing 600E in sales. People tend to forget just how many Raptors and Sceadus are sold in comparison to the 50 sized e-heli's.

I agree all I was saying is this forum will be hugely congested with many newcomer nitro questions within a few months, guranteed.

Even after all this discussion about dial indicating and it's benefits, I'm not sure the original question was ever answered. Anybody know if the fan on the 600N is held on via collets or if it's the screw on variety? Is the start shaft an integral part of the clutch ala the Synergy or Hirobo lineup?

I was told at the Huntsville fun fly by JK that the fan (or was it the fan hub?) was a screw on like a raptor. It is not Freya evo collet style.

The Freya Evo isn't bad at all. The older Freya was a PITA!

from the pre production model i've seen, it had a hub similiar to the hyper performance synergy hub

The hub is very similar to teh hyper hub, and requires no dial indicating. Just push it over the crankshaft, do up the nut and calmp it with the two lower cap bolts. Something they should have gotten right on the N9 in the first place.
You can see the hub in my pic below.
