I just built a trex 450se kit, I have not bought the electronics yet. My local hobby shop who has been excellent so far is reccomending one of two set ups, either the JR R790 transmitter that comes with 3 ds285 servos or a fubata 6 channel 2.4 gig transmitter with hs-65 servos. He still gives a heads up to the JR equipment at this point, he is an avid Heli flyer and uses the JR stuff. Since I am starting fresh I wanted to see if there are strong opinnions from the group one way or the other.

The R790 is a receiver... That transmitter would be the 7202, which is what I'm currently using. I'm very pleased with the radio, which I'm using for a TRex 450, Raptor 50 scaler, and several planks.

FWIW, the Spektrum DX7 is basically the 7202 on 2.4g. It was not available when I bought my 7202, or I probably would have gone with the DX7.

I have not had any issues with FM, but I live in a relatively rural area, and our club is usally not too crowded on the flightline. That said, I'm planning on upgrading to the new 9ch JR 2.4g radio later this year, mostly because I would like more channels for scale stuff, and it'll be nice to give up the hassle of freq pins. On the other hand, I'm not looking forward to buying a bunch of $100 receivers...

AFA JR v. Futaba, that's pretty much the same as Ford v. Chevy...

according to the JR website (horizon) the 2.4ghz is not due out untill July, and is slated for $700+. Makes sense if you think that a 9303 without module/rx is $400+, and the spektrum module is another $200+. This will give you more features, and even less delay with the way everything's wired up. There's a discussion on it somewhere in the 2.4ghz radio section, but I can't seem to find it right now.

Or get a 9303 and an XPS 2.4 GHzmodule setup.

LOTS of choices.

I would NOT get the Futaba 6ch 2.4 GHz, as it is based on a lower line Tx, missing some features you would like to have.

I agree, you'll definitely want some of the extra features on the 7ch. radio. If you really want a 2.4gHz Futaba system, wait for the the new 7C.

As for JR v Futaba... that's very much "ford v chevy" or "nissan v toyota v honda". You'll get LOTS of opinions, some of them very strong. So, here's my opinion, free and worth every penny: :)

I watch people buy radios in our Local Hobby Shop that specializes in Helis. Over a hundred a year. The guy who runs the shop is very unbiased... he can set up Futaba, JR, Airtronics, he's even ordered Royal Evo (which are very uncommon in the USA). He stocks several 7 and 9 channel Futaba and JR. He can get the exotic (10x 14mz) in a couple of days. The point here: No bias.

Once people REALLY look at the setups for helis, JR outsells Futaba about 2 or 3 to 1.

Ok, I expect a lot of flaming from the Futaba guys... I'm just reporting an observation here...

The fact is that any of the "Big Manufacturer" 7 or 9 channel radios will work fine. I'd give a slight edge to the DX7... for the moment, I've set aside my JR 9303 and am flying most stuff on the 7.

Maybe that is the case in the hobby shop you frequent. But from my experience of going to events and looking in the radio impound that is not the case. I see more Futaba radios than I do other brands.

Yes I am a Futaba guy, but what I am stating is just what I see from going around different areas to events.

David, I think this may be area specific. I see a good mix in impounds around Texas and Lousiana and Oklahoma. Hard to say that either Fut or Jr is dominant in impounds.

I just know what sells when people really look at and take their time with the menues and setups. I've flown both, Futaba for nearly 20 years, and in the last 5 years or so gradually shifted entirely to JR.

Again, no right answer...

Could you clarify? I'm a newbie, and the specs on the new Futaba 6EX 2.4 Ghz looked ok to me. Thanks.

Reegor, the Fut 6 is limited in features as compared to almost any 7, 8, or 9 channel radio out there. It would take a LOT of typing to explain... so instead, do some searches in this forum. There are several threads comparing the Fut 6 and DX6 and DX7 radios.

Lack of subtrims heads the list. :)

The Futaba 6 ch is the lowest featured 6 ch out by the major players (JR, Futaba, Hitec).
