Hi, Is it better to use digital servos for cyclic also? Any recommendation? currently using Futaba 9202. Thanks

Futaba 9252 seems to be the standard choice. I bought mine used and it has JR DS8311's on the swash. I've had no reason to complain, but it's a scaler; although I did fly it for a couple months as pod/boom and was doing mild aerobatics, but not hard 3D.

I second what Rodan said, 9252's works great. Having said that I'll point out that I had the 9252 on my collective fail recently. The output shaft sheared off at the top of the case. I managed to land safely thanks to the screw that held the horn on. No one I asked had ever seen that type of failure, and I believe that it was an isolated incident. I’ve since gone to a JR8611 on the collective while keeping the 9252s on everything else. Let me tell you that the 8611 is a monster! Talk about collective response! Makes the collective react like a CCPM set-up, I love it…

Hey Jimmy, I like your avatar... you race?
I was all set to go amateur last year, and ended up having to move and sold my racebike... :arggg:
The good news is RC is the replacement (besides, I'm getting old, and the Formula 40 guys out here are FAST!

9252s like anything else can have failures but overall they have a very high reliablity rate and is a big difference in response compared to 9202s.

Rodan,
I did a bit of racig back in the late 80's. Found out quickly that I was lacking a serious amount of talent! :OMG So I moved onto Karts and later SCCA.
Sorry for the thread jack Guys...

I'm currently S3001 servos for my cyclic and collective plus HS5945 for my throttle as I'm running in my engine. due to budget constraints, I intend to only upgrade my collective servos to Hitec HS5645MG and temporary keep my collective servo as S3001.
I'm still learning 3D (flips, piro, lousy tic tocs). Is the above setup sufficient? Especially with the collective servo on S3001?

Upgrade your collective servo first then your cyclics as a pair. I wouldnt run 40 oz torque servos on a 50 while doing flips but you need to weigh the cost of a crash due to a failed servo versus the cost of decent servos.

Im running hitec for the pitch i have a HS9665 and for the cyclics HS6635
i hope these are ok for the throttle i only have an analog HS525.

Hi Andy, Thanks for your advice. Looks like collective servo is rather important. What is the minimum specs for servos that will allow us to 3D on Raptor 50?

I'd go over 50oz of torque and .2 or faster.

Metal gear servos are generally considered a bad thing in nitro helis. They wear out and develop slop a lot faster than nylon gears due to vibrations.

..... you need to weigh the cost of a crash due to a failed servo versus the cost of decent servos.
I was advised not to fit expensive servos because of the "crash cost" - I used JR NES-539's for cyclic on my Rap 50V2 and on Sunday the Aileron servo failed in flight and I planted the Heli.
I have to admit that the warning signs were there when I pre-flighted - the Aileron servo did seem rather sluggish compared to the Elevator but I chose to fly anyway - lesson learned!! :arggg:
It might just have been a “bad” 539 but I am going to replace cyclic servos with better ones now.

About the only thing that usually breaks in a crash is the gears though you can tear up the case and total a servo if you really pile it in most of the time it costs about 8 bucks to fix a good servo in a crash, and twice I've had to replace the case top because the mounting ears broke.

So its better not to use metal gear servos right? Hey Barracuda, 50oz of torque is only around 1plus kg. I dun think that is enough right, unless my conversion is wrong..  . Still trying to find the correct servos for usage with my limited budget.

It's approx 14:1(13.88) oz/in to kg/cm. So a 50oz servo is around 3.6kg/cm which is not enough really for cyclic and pitch. I go for around 6kg for cyclic and 10kg+ for pitch and as fast as you can afford for each servo.
9252 are great on both a R50 and R90 for cyclic. They're all plastic gears and don't get any slop over time like my metal gear Hitec digital's all have. The replacement gear sets for the 9252,9253,9254 are only a few dollars to replace. Metal sets for the Hitecs are much more.
Something in a crash has to give, better the gear set than a broken servo case or worse.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like I have to continue to search for the most suitable servos for my rappy which will fit my budget. 9252 is currently out of my budget. Any other recommendation?

I use DS1015's all the way around and 9254 on tail
DS1015's are way more responsive and alot more torque. I have flown raptor 50's both with 9252 all around and mine with DS1015's. Wow there is a huge difference. Con is you have to run 6v regulated and a step down on the gyro or servo.
They center very well. Pilots who have used and tested these from the get go have said they will begin to get slop at around 200flights, but I would imagine any servo with that many flights would do the same.
DS1015
201 oz. of Torque
.108 Speed
@6v , metal gears

Would anyone like to comment on the Airtronics 94758 or the Futaba 9250 as possible options?

I first started on the JR ES539 cos it was the most affordable servo during the time i bought my kit. So i used them on my cyclic. I had so many negative stories about those servos and was advice to change them. So 6 months into my Titan life, i move into a full digital set up. But not before i flip, loop and roll with my 539. Yup it was not meant for such stuff but it hold and i survived. '
My current set up for throttle and tail is the 9254
Cyclic and pitch is the Hitec Digital
