Hi ive been flying a fixed pitch hybrid micro for about a year and its time to upgrade to a cp. Ive looked at the T-rex and it seems to me to be the pic of the crop in terms of my needs. Big + for me is the hassle free operation that these machines seem to provide acording to all the reviews ive read. one question tho
Does the belt drive cause any issues in regards to static build up causing clitchs with the radio ive heard on some of the older belt drive choppers this was a problem.
At this stage I think I will go with the flying hobby combo deal as it will get me up and running for the least amount of outlay. Is this combo the go or am I better to look else where

Every copter I own is belt driven and I've never had a problem (T-Rex included). Most of the electronics that I have in the T-Rex now used to be in a Zoom 400. I had some serious glitching in that heli (and it has a shaft-driven tail). It turned out to be caused by feedback from the ESC getting into the receiver. I put a choke on the lead from the ESC and it solved the problem in the Zoom and it has not shown up in the Rex.
The flying hobby combo looks good, but I don't like the HS55 servos. They aren't quite strong enough for the T-Rex. They'll work, I just wonder how long they'll last. If you're ordering from F.H., consider the Align servos instead. Otherwise, it looks like a solid combo.

Hey Bimmer,
What make/model choke did you use? Where did you get it, and what part number? I'm assuming it's a toroid choke? I have also seen "glitch reducers" which I think are nothing more than capacitors.

Erich,
The one I have came from JR and I bought it at my local hobby shop. I hesitate to say it was made by JR because it probably wasn't. They come as a pair in a JR package for about $10. It's basically just a magnetic ring that you loop the lead through.
My first intention was to make my own based on an article printed in the AMA rag a few months ago. But I must've not been the only one with that idea because I couldn't find anybody who had the components in stock. So I got the JR version to hold me over until I could make one. But it's been working so well that I never bothered to make one.
I was in the hobby shop over the weekend and he had some in stock. If you can't find any locally, he advertises here on HF (Hodges Hobbies). Give him a call and he can send it to you.

I'll look to see if I still have the package. If I do, I'll let you know what the part number is.

Thanks for the info guys I will go with the flying hobby package and look into swapping out the servos with some I already have.
I also need to get a good radio for this heli and im not sure which way to go any ideas what would suit my needs with this heli. I understand they do not require ccpm for the trex but im thinking about getting a radio with this function for future machines. Is the eclipse 7 heli radio a good choice or should i spend a few more dollars and go for a futaba setup

Well, you'll need a heli radio for sure. Beyond that, nearly all of them are computerized and have CCPM functionality. Of course you don't need that for the T-Rex.
If you're getting local help, I would get whatever brand they use. That way they'll be more able to help you. If you don't need help, any other the four major manufactures would be a good choice. I recently got a JR 9303 and I think it's a great system. The JR 6102 is also an excellent radio for only about $250. Lots of guys like the Futaba 9C and now there is the lower cost 7C. Any would be a good choice.

Anyone tried Radio Shack for the chokes? I think they usually stock some but I haven't looked.

I looked online, and what they had was rather large.

Measures 7/8" x 7/16" Inside

Couldn't find any at the local stores. JR (Horizon) is the place to go for the torroids.

Cool!
I got to fly mine today in about 20MPH wind. It handled it, but it wasn't a whole lot of fun!
