I have read that you have to remove the crystal while you use XTR is there any truth to this

Depends on your radio. Ny 9C comes on when I plug the Reflex cord in, but only the encoder section (the "RF" LED on the face of the radio doesn't light up) In this case, there's no need to remove the crystal or module.
I also have an old JR 6 channel that I use with Reflex, that one DOES require the crystal to come out when I use it with Reflex.
If your Radio broadcasts when you're running Reflex, then removing the crystal will disable the RF section and you'll get a LOT longer time before having to recharge. Also keeps the RF section from overheating (extending the antenna does this too, but you don't get the extended battery life that removing teh crystal provides)

I have a Airtronics RD8000 there no note saying to remove it
but I have seen in RR to remove it to operate XTR
So it sounds like no big deal to keep it in just keep an eye on the battery

If it broadcasts, I would do whatever your radio requires to disable broadcasting. I've only seen transmitters that automatically disable broadcasting when the trainer cord is in use. If the RD8000 isn't automatic, then I would remove the crystal, if that's what it takes to avoid overheating & battery use. This saves battery cycles and prolongs the radio equipment.
