I've been thinking about this heli for a while and pending how others experience go I may get a Whippy Gasser. Here's the setup I'm considering...

Whippy Gasser
RC-Aftermarket Hyper Z-30.5cc RC format engine
Mikado full size V-bar or Spartan RC VX-1
RC Stator Gator
Torq 9180/9188 on cyclic/tail
Hyperion DH-20X-GCB for throttle
2s2500 gens ace RX pack
Mavrikk G5 710mm FBL blades
Edge 105mm tail blades (already have these)

I'm not sure about the other parts like the exhaust pipe or the clunk. I know I'll use a bit of Hayes fuel tubing inside the tank. Is there anything I'm forgetting?

I'm working on having a CF mount made for the whiplash so that you could mount a Jewel generator on board just like the Spectra and the 1005. It would wrap around the frames and mount the motor on top where the start shaft sticks out.

With that then you can use a variety of batteries as a backup power option.

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to use a generator on the Whippy. Right now I think I'm going to just use a rx pack and I may get a generator for it at a later date once I have an idea how much power the servos use.

Are either of the rx switch locations accessible with the canopy on? They both appear to be fairly well buried under the canopy.

Are there any cuts in the frames for zip ties to secure wiring?

My proposed setup please critique

TRM 270 TT or Hanson 290 3Dmax
Align 610s
Fromeco Arizona reg
5200mah Relion something smaller if it saves enough weight to be worth it
CGY/750 please suggest a tail servo to use with this
Stator gator
Rotortech, Mavrikk G5s or Radix
Hatori, Century/V5 or RJX muffler I love the deep sound of the RJX but I am unsure about the quality
All this setup to my DX-7

I plan on running 1750 1850 and 2000 in IDL 2 if thats what I need to do to get the performance that I desire. I will probaly fly 1850 most of the time and only use IDL 2 if I need more punch.

Subscribed! I like the idea of flying all day on pump gas!

might want to add klots 100% synthetic oil to the list.
you dont want carbon deposits in that motor, klotz is what I ran on the old x-cell gasser and the motor stayed clean

i've been looking at this new gasser coming out
http://www.ronlund.com/rcheli-prod/XCELL_KITS/MA1033-1.html

but man 1100.00 for the kit + motor +blades +electronics+accessories
2500.00 for 1 heli
I might as well put a DJI wookong flight system in it while i'm at it
at least with the old gasser you could get a kit with the motor,
alot of people ran to stock muffer but the aftermarket wrap to the back
muffer was so much nicer sounding and it did run better on it

$1100..... ouch!
Thats gonna hit $1700 here in the uk, Thats just to expensive for me, I love my spectra G to bits but thats alot of cash.

Joe

Ps. one piece at a time comes to mind on this one.

Why is the gas version $200 more than the electric flybarless? Does it come with a muffler?

CGY/750 please suggest a tail servo to use with this

either use the BLS251 with a step down or the BLS256HV if you're running 6V or more

I'm not aware that the price has been finalized yet. It does not include a muffler, or motor, or blades, or electronics.

Hello everyone! :peace

I spoke with Chirs today at Minature Aircraft and it sounds like late spring remains the target window for the Whiplash Gasser's public debut.

I have a couple of questions if some-one could please help. (Guess I should have asked Chirs! DUH! :arggg:

Im having a hard time tracking down where to purchase the following items for the forthcoming Whiplash:

1) stator gator

2) the generator for inflight battery charging - brand?

3) Also - Information on appropriate blade sizes for the Whip.

Thank you for your help!

WIZ

both heliproz.com and ronlund.com sell the Stator Gator GGS23. Thats the one you'll need
690mm blades seem to be the preferred size if you're going to thrash the model around. It will support 710's
As to the generator, you'll have to check with Raja, for now he's got the only one available. There will be some alternatives a bit later this year

Have you logged much flight time on yours yet Carey?

if my schedule doesn't get hosed, its gonna get its first flight today!

a rule I learned a long time ago, take all the static photos you plan on taking before you fly, and I took the last ones this morning

Good luck. Please let us know your initial impressions. I am getting a lot of heat from a buddy of mine who is a Century Rep because I want a Whiplash instead of a Radikal!

well it has flown!

not really much to report at this point, just tinkering with throttle/pitch curves and letting the gears start to seat in. no incidents or unusual events though!

You will have enough juice to fly permanently with a generator and can downsize your 5000mah pack in 1/2 as otherwise its wasted sitting idle with a generator.

You can also fly at any time without having to charge, like coming home from work in the evening, the weather is calm and only an hour of daylight left, just go fly and charge in the air.

You can go to funflys or IRCHA with no charger for the entire week.

That's the idea but not to say a big battery won't work either. Its just whatever you like better.

oh ok :YeaBaby:
now would this setup charge lipo and balance the pack?
or it only works with other packs?
and how much weight are we adding to the bird with the gen?

rbort

Yes it wil charge a lipo but it does not balance it. You will have to do that occasionally yourself its not essential to balance a pack every time and remember in flight with a generator the pack is mostly idle not draining hard so the cells should stay pretty close to each other (no deep or hard discharge applied). It will not overcharge the pack, that is essential so there is no worries about that.

It works with 4 or 5 cell NiCD or NiMH packs, 2 cell LiFE packs, 2 or 3 cell Li-ion of Lipo packs.

The single output generator itself is about 3.7oz, dual output is 4.6oz model specific mount not included.

Take out the heavier / more capacity battery pack as its not needed with a generator and replace with a smaller one and the generator and you're practically up to the same total weight.
