View Full Version : Lama bottom rotor sticking

Been happily 'flying' around my lounge with the Lama, until this latest ding. Which I would describe as a moderate ding on the ding-ometer!
Now the bottom rotor is catching on something and flying is a lot less stable - it's flyable, but careering around and I have to make BIG corrections.
At the very lowest revs the top rotor is spinning fine, but the bottom rotor almost does a complete revolution then stops as it catches on something. If I add a little bit more power it starts to spin, but it's making a noise that suggests it catching on something constantly.
Looking at the shaft and co, nothing looks bent or damaged.
It is flyable, but as I say, very much less stable - untrimmable basically.
What do you think experts?!

Sounds like you have damaged a tooth on the main gear driving the lower rotor

That sounds serious! What parts would I need to fix that? How easy is it to replace that?

Don't know about parts availability on a Lama, check with your supplier. On a CP machine it is no great shakes as the main gear is just bolted or pinned onto the main shaft and one the bolt / pin is removed the shaft can be raised and the gear slid out and a new one slipped in ( a bit more work if the main gear incorporates the autorotation unit)
Main gears regularly strip in crashes, just read some of the other threads regarding crash damage eg in the T-Rex 600 forum main gears are almost always one of the casualties, particularly if the power is still on when the impact occurs, In some of the larger electrics the gear can be stripped if the soft start isn't engaged on trhe ESC and the throttle is raised too quickly.

Thanks Paul!
Having narrowed it down to the gear, I have lost two teeth on the bottom rotor gear.
Looking at the schematic, it's 'Main Gear B'.
I'm a bit confused which part to buy though as these look quite similar:
EK1 0557 Gear Shaft B Outer Shaft
http://www.heliguy.com/Electric-RC-Helicopters/ESKY-Lama-2/EK1-0557-Gear-Shaft-B-Outer-Shaft/
OR
EK1 0316 Gear and Shaft Set B
http://www.heliguy.com/Electric-RC-Helicopters/ESKY-Lama-2/EK1-0316-Gear-and-Shaft-Set-B/
Which should I get? It's only the gear itself which is broken.

I think you will have to contact heliguy direct and clarify, my gut reaction is that they have used the wrong picture on EK1 0557 as the description is of the outer shaft only. Where as EK1 0316 is for the shaft and gear, though it seems strange that the gear is not available seperately. I would try looking on Ebay, I have bought quite a few things off Ebay and have been conned by Europeans and Americans but never by Asians in Hong Kong, China or Tiawan. Just find an Asian `shop' selling the Lama and check on their site for spares

The part is below import duty price so it would cost £9.20 and he has them in stock, I don't know what Heliguy P&P is but with VAT I don't think there would be much in it. The last parts I ordered from China (alloy upgrades for my Walkera 60 took 16 days to arrive though (about the slowest shipping I've had from China!)
