I got my new tail rotor gear box in yesterday and installed...Pretty straight forward.I had to modify the pitch slider to get it to work properly but no big deal.. Test flew this morning and its smooth and quite..I like it...Now lets just see how it stands up to the ultimate test...SAND... I should be able to make my dust cover in a day or two and I will post pics of it then.

One thing here Robert ,,This Pitch Slider wont work on the Open gear box without removing some metal off of the loop .. it will bind and hit the black round roller and give you no throw without removing at least have of the metal loop...easy to do ....I just dont know how long the loop will last now that its half it original size..I filed it with a jewler's file to keep the file marks as small as possible..this is really a bad picture and you cant see it very well.....So far Im please with it...

Dean,
Why did you have to modify the pitch slider? I see you have the CNC pitch slider from the FAI Tempest. Also I believe that is a 3D gear box. So the pitch slider would not fit on the arm? The arms are different between the 3D and FAI, it is just not one is threaded and the other is not. You need the FAI arm to fit on the 3D box. The gear boxes are the same besides the arm, just the FAI is built for right side rotation and 3D is built for left side.

No need to put a cover over the gear box. That was on of the test that MA did when they made the video that is on the MA website. They poured sand thru the gear box while it was turning 8K RPM. A cover would just add unnessecary weight to the rear of the heli and offer no benefit.

David the arm that came with the gear box is to small for cnc pitch slider. See pic 2.The black roller hit the loop on the free end of the slider.See pic 1....I had to remove about half of the loop inorder to get full travel. I installed the original arm that came with the slider and I think that is where the problem is..I dont know for sure..But I know thats its working now and tomarrow Im gonna run the devil out of it and see what its made of..if it will take the sand then I wont waste my time making a carbon cover..Thanks for the insight..

I had same problem with my, I file some off from that arm then I come to conclusion that it will be not safe. I order just arm from MA is $12.95 part#123-85.

Dean,
Since from the pictures it looks like a 3D open gear box you ordered that is set up for the left side rotation. The arm that comes with the 3D box is not designed to work with the Tempest FAI slider. The proper arm to work with the Tempest FAI slider is 123-85 that comes with the FAI open gear box.

The difference in the arms is one is set up for the Tempest FAI slider and the other is set up for the plastic bellcrank and pitch slider. 3D is threaded, FAI is not, but there is some more differences also. Personally myself I would have not modified any parts. I would use the correct parts. Modifying parts does cause failures some times.

too bad they didn't poor sand on the gearbox while it was running to see what it would do. Would have been a good test, afterall, the gear are right out in the open. Some dirt is gonna get on it eventually.

According to DavidH they did exactly that and it passes with flying colors

David said they did put sand thru it during testing. Back in his earlier post here. ^

Guess they should have filmed like the 2x4 test. We wanna see utter brutality. Nothing as brutal as a newbie butchering the assembly of a fury.

Looking at Dean's first picture, I now understand why they had a shortage of YS91s for almost 2 months.

Yes the day before the video was made that is on the MA website. Tim and Chris did the same test as the one of the video. The gear box was turning 8K rpm. Chris went next door to MA where they make some concrete products. He got a container of sand. While the gear box was turning he poured a cup full of sand down thru the gears. Then started sticking the 2X4 into the tail blades, till the tail blades were broken nubs. It was then decided to do the test again and video the 2X4 being stuck into the tail blades while they were turning 8K rpm. That is the video that is on the website. Bob Primm ( Bob7657) got to witness all these tests also.

Sorry for the shortage there Kthane....Yhea I had to go out and replace every OS c spec that I owned..got tired of fighting the leaning problem..So now I have 3 new YS's installed and one spare balanced and waitting.... The problem here is they get them in stock and when they run out and no one orders anymore...so these have to last for the year.....When you fly in the sand and your burning about 4 case's of fuel a month the chances of you makeing it thru the year are slim...thats why I have a spare....

I'm back in business, just put 4 tanks through my brand spankin YS91. Tuning is so easy on these things. Started with 1 out on the high, 1.625 out on the mid. After 2 tanks I turned in the high 2 clicks. It's done... running smooth, cool and got all the power I'll ever need. Getting an OS needled right, well... :arggg:

Now I gotta get a new super duty clutch and the new beargox and I'll be up to speed til the next big thing hits the market.

I just installed mine today. I need a new t/r rod and threaded ends. I bought this heli used and the person before me jb welded the ends in place. I heated it to see if it would budge, but no luck. I hope to have it up in the air this week or so.

Be careful heating the rod up as well. The resin can be cooked out of the carbon fiber weakening the rod.

I think that the now open gear box runs smoother..its deffinately quieter

I have to get a new one. I heated it to much and the C/F rod broke. :arggg: I could probably fix it but why take the chance.

The new gearbox seems to be a lot more free as well. Some of the top pilots flying them have said they can tell a big difference in their autos and maneuvers that require a lot of power. The other major obvious benefir is no gear mesh to adjust and no greasing to keep up with!! :)

Good enough for me, gotta get me a couple more.... I like simple

You may be right.... I only have a few flights on mine;and Im fighting a TJ that refuses to work..I got it second hand so I guess I gets what I pay for..hehehe anyway new TJ ordered and when it comes in I will be putting the time on this one for sure....Funny I have never once looked at the gear mesh since I installed this Open G/B..just to new to worry about for now...

I noticed that when I hold the tail and head and I try to turn the tail to see how much backlash the new box has I noticed that if I turned the tail with more force the torque tube would flex more than with the old tailbox. Has anyone noticed this also?
