View Full Version : Flying beyond your known limits

I know we all want to learn to do tricks and 3D as soon as possible but lately I have seen some people go too far when they are not even CLOSE to being ready.
Trust me I learned my lesson 3 years ago doing low flips with a Raptor 50. I almost hit myself and had to purposely DUMP the heli to keep it from flying into the pits.. I was really not ready to be doing flips low in front of myself. I learned respect that day and not to push my limits too far until I am ready.
Now I am not posting this to beat on Victor but this is an example of what I am talking about:

Clearly you must learn to control the heli in a hover first before trying to do 3D tricks. It is clear to me he does not have good control of the heli even in a hover. He himself had to back up while just hovering. It was pure luck that heli crashed where it did and did not go somewhere else. I fear it is a matter of time before he hurts himself or someone else.
So please... It doesnt matter what sized heli you fly... Learn things a step at a time and do each advancement until it is perfected and you are comfortable BEFORE proceeding to advanced manuevers.
Most pros will tell you to learn control of the heli in a hover in all orientations FIRST before moving on. Doing this allows you to learn to bail out of mistakes when the heli goes into any orientation and not just get lucky to where it plants itself.
Look we all crash and most the time it is due to a loss of control or "dumb thumb". But almost everyone I know goes up high and gets a good safety distance when trying something new. This does two things:
1) Provides you some room to recover.
2) Provides a safe distance for mistakes and crashes.
Anyway after seeing a 3rd video of his unsafe flying I just had to say something and use this as an example of what NOT to do.
Enjoy and safe flying,
Bob

He really isn't progressing at all.

I couldn't agree more. So how did he take it when you told him this at the field?

This wasnt at my field. It was at another field with some very good pilots and a club. Why those people are not trying to teach him the proper way to learn is beyond me.... I think they want to see him crash or something.
If he was flying at my field I would have a serious talk with him about how to learn and progess.

Didn't you try that before and he pretty much ignored you???

well, as a noobie, all I can say is WTF! This guy is out of control, and brains!

YES... he looked right through me as if I wanst there when I tried to tell him how to learn and progress.... I could see in his eyes that all he wanted was MaSSive 3Dz.... It's all he could talk about....
Sad man.... To some extent I feel sorry for the idiot....

Even a normal stabile hover seems to be beyond his limits.

Agreed... many have tried to tell him to get his hovering skills FIRST.. But to him doing MaSSive 3Dz and endangering people is a higher priority.

Bob I know what you mean. We all want push it in an attempt to learn faster. Just last night I was trying to land nose in with my 450 V2 in a 10 to 20 mph wind. I didn't feel comfortable, it got away from me and started to come at me so I had to ditch it before it hit me. I should have known better, I was way past my comfort level and now it cost me all the usual parts plus a head and tail :bomb: I guess thats better then slicing my bare shins open though.
I think the point is that you know when your trying to hard, its convincing yourself to back off thats hard, basically and ego trip.
BTW, I can't get that video to work. :dontknow

****** must have known you linked his video to this site because now all it shows is a Winamp style music visualization screen and the sound. Obviously he still trolls here. It must be that he really loves this site and feels left out.

Bruce, your missing a CODEC as the video still works... If you get only audio then your missing a video CODEC. I prop'ed the movie and it needs the MPEG Layer 3 Codec...

Thanks, I thought I had just about every codec installed on my machine but obviously missed one.

I am going to try something out of my limits (maybe). If it's not too windy then I am going to go up quite high (I usually keep it low to the ground) and try some nose in. I can do this with the club heli (on a buddy cord) but it's a bit freaky doing it myself... But here goes!

The video finally worked. I must have had a glitch because I did not reinstall any new codecs. Any how...
It doesn't look like ****** has learned anything new. He still prefers tail-in after all this time and just wants to flip the helicopter with no care for control if it gets misoriented. It does look like he's getting tired of crashing because he didn't make the usual jokes he did in the beginning.

Yea well imagine this... He is getting a Raptor e550! Imagine that crashing at your feet!

Finless, looks like he's doing some Foward Flight now.
I thought you said he could barily hover, and now he's flying around a baseball field?
What gives man?

He can barely hover. A hover is stable, on the same height. Take a look at some FAI vids. THAT is a good hover.
But I can see a little bit of progress though. Try to do the figure 8s on the same height and same speed. This will fasten your progress more.
I hope his eRap550 will help with that precision.
(First vid isn't working anymore)
But, if the second video is "improvement", I dont think I've got the balls to watch it. The second video made me want to hide behind my chair..

I'm far from mistake free when it comes to helis but I'm definitely not reckless.
I push in the sim and do what I'm 100% comfortable with in "real life". Back when sims weren't available you didn't have a choice but today... to me, learning to fly with a Trex or any CP Heli is asking for pain somewhere (wallet or body).
I just joined the AMA and I'm going to try to join a local flying club (VFSS). I don't think anyone should be allowed on a flying field (unsupervised) until they prove a certain level of proficiency (either with an instructor or a sim) and are considered responsible enough by a flight instructor, etc. Nothing would piss me off more than if either myself or a friend / family member got buzzed or hit by an aircraft because the person flying it was doing something reckless.

None of the videos work anymore, can't see any of them.
R1R 7humbs, let me know how it goes with VFSS, i do demonstrations at their fun fly's in the summer and fall.

Hey all,
While I agree 100% about not being stupid and endangering yourself and others, I think I've seen what can cause people to go beyone their limits.
Whenever a newby askes quesions like "Hey, my nerves won't let me try nose in...or hey I'm afraid to try inverted" etc. I've seen MANY people say, "man, you just have to get over the fear and GO FOR IT!....fear is holding you back....don't let it...if you stay within your comfort zone you'll never learn..etc.". While this is true, I think they should also tell them how to get over the fear SAFELY! Tell them to try new things up high! Tell them to master them on a sim first! To give fair credit, I have seen many people mention these things too, but not always.
Also, I can personally say that getting the heli up high to try new things in itself is pretty daunting! I can tail in hover very well now, but have been nervous to have it go too high knowing that if I wreck from up there it will be a lot worse so I've really never gone much higher than about 15 feet up for now...
I for one am normally a very impulsive person, but with my new TREX I just finished, I will take it VERY slow...I want to feel at least partially comfortable before trying even the slightest new thing and I WILL be very confident on my sim first.
So to bottom line is a good balance....use common sense when trying new things and above all safety first!
