View Full Version : First failure

Have a brand new whiplash with 5 flights and no problems until this morning. First flight noticed a noise and tail wag. I landed the helicopter and saw the tooth broke off the main gear. this sucks my 1 fear has been realized and that was the main gear is 2 weak. So disappointed no hard landing no tail taps no reason for the failure whatsoever was even on a slow start up with the phoenix ice hv 160 . hopefully m a can send me her new gear on monday . the big problem now is I'm afraid it will happen again why wouldn't they have used a larger tooth gear like the x7?

7hv is a mod 1 as well, bro. :) Just sayin'.

On my F6, I've had two really BAD crashes, and the main gear came out like a rose. I'm thinking there's the possibility you just got a bad one.

that's what I'm hoping it had to of been a bad year I've had mod ones on my t rex 600 with 12 cells never go bad except on a bad crash where I hit under power.

It's the first I've ever heard of an MA gear failing in flight.
Make sure you call MA and tell them, if there is an issue that needs sorting out they need to know to be able to fix it.

Had a main gear failure too, one tooth broken. Was just hovering making some adjustments and heard a noise. After landing I heard a ticking sound as the blades slowed. E-mailed MA, they are sending a new gear.

I guess I will fly the Tempest this weekend if that gear doesn't get here in time. I really wanted to get some flights in on this new bird.

that doesn't sound too encouraging . I assume yours just broke no reason.

Yea, it just broke. Took everything apart to do a failure analysis and sent my findings to miniature.

I should've said our findings in my last post. My friend and local MA rep came by to check out my bird.

Did you find a cause?

No smoking gun

It's amazes me how the prototypes get (I'm assuming) hours and hours put on them, and all bugs worked out, then the production models get out there and things start popping up. I'm sure it's not uncommon, but it must be frustrating for the company not just the consumer.

For me, it's all in how the company handles the issues as they crop up, and I'm pretty confident that MA will stand behind their product and work to resolve them. Easy for me to say I guess, I'm still waiting on my kit and not the one trying to enjoy the heli!

The difference between prototyping and production! Like you, if they stand by their product, I'm good and I'm confident they will.

You know they will in fact my new main gear is on its way . This failure to me is a huge surprise considering the quality of their machining and the way they hold very low tolerances. Thanks MA for the fast response.

My gear is already on it's way too. Customer service is great and I haven't piled my bird into the ground because of a failure, all is well.

yes as long as it was only our 2 defective parts.

when I look closely with a magnifying glass it almost looks as if it was a void in the plastic where the tooth broke off. I'm sending it in to MA so maybe they can figure out what happened.

Took 3 setup flights with the new main gear everything seems to be great . going for my first 3 d flights next
