I'm closed of finishing assembling my Sceadu 50 and I found that I do not have the air filter for the engine.

What type of air filter you use? There is very little room to install it.

no air filter is used.

Air filters are a hassle.

As far as I can tell the fan is a pretty good filter because the centrifugal force throws most of the dust away from the carb. If that isn't right, so what, because my engines have never worn out because of debris, and I live right in the middle of the U.S. Dustbowl.

This is a logical explanation. Ok I will go without the filter. And worse case scenario; I will just have to buy piston sleeve. Actually this is not the worse case scenario. I should add 'without a crase' due to engine failure.

We can't afford to loose the power - the air filter is restrictive
Every now and again we do get crap in the engine
Avoid going negative on spool down when landing on dirty surface,
as that sucks the dirt up through the heli

Thanks Jafa. Excuse my newbie ignorance but can you tell what 'negative on spool down' means. I searched google and could not find it.

After you land the heli and throttle back, the blades will typically go to negative pitch, especially if you are into aerobatics and autos. In normal mode, this can cause an updraft while the blades spin down.

The simple solution is to land in throttle hold. Cut the throttle just a few inches above the ground and let the blades spin down in positive pitch.

This can not rectify the whole situation though, as when the heli is hovered in ground effect, there is a noticeable "bubble" of smoke that stays right around the body of the heli. I would imagine this is also a bubble of particulate matter such as dust. As I have said before, I have never worn out an engine due to dust. Lean runs are more a problem, as well as hot starts and other self induced phenomena.

I make it a part of my maintenence schedule to remove the carb for a bath. It assures my engines will always run consistant. Pollen , dirt, and dust all can enter at anytime. Not too much room for filters. Too bad though.
