I got into heli AP initially because I wanted to shoot backcountry skiing with it. First I had the Bergen EB, that was too heavy to haul around on my back for thousands of feet. I sold that, and gambled on the Trex. My luck paid off.
I hauled the Trex, Askman, radio, camera, and a couple batteries on my pack up the Alta ski area today. Didn't slow me down at all. I can climb about 2,500 to 3,000 feet an hour on a normal day, and with the heli and all the gear, I was climbing about 2,400ft an hour. So no big slow down.
Elevation was 10.2k, winds were 15-25mph. At my house, I fly at 70% throttle with the governor. At 10.2k I just guessed, and set it at 85%. Lifted off with the 4 pound payload somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 stick. Flew just fine. Had to think ahead, as response time was a little slower. But overall, it worked just fine. The winds were quite gusty, and the windiest I have ever flow in, but overall, I think it's functional.
