i have a futaba 6exh transmitter and a 146ip reciever, and i wan't to know how to do a range check.
the manual that came with the transmitter says to put the aeriel down and walk 30 steps away from the model, and i should have full controll. but that was with the reciever which came with the tx (which is a full range reciever). the 146ip isn't a full range reciever, so im assuming that its range with the aeriel down will be much less, and it is. i can walk about 10 steps before i loose all controll. does anyone know if thats normal or not?

I can get well over 50ft with the 14MZ (and the 9C when I had it) with no glitch or fail safe and still with full control. The 9c is with the first segment out and the 14MZ is with the aerial installed but not extended

How is your aerial on the 146 routed?

it is pointing straight out the back of the helicopter, in a straight line.

Not normal if I compare the results to my 146iP and my 9C. I still have full control if I leave the heli on my patio and walk to the far side of my backyard. That's probably 75-80 feet easy...

My antenna routes from the rear, along the left side of the frame, through the antenna tube on the left skid legs and then terminates at the tailfin. Almost like this, but I've rerouted it with some crash repairs:

Is the antenna wire doubled back on itself??

i attached the antenna tube to the tail fin, and put the reciever wire in a straight line out the back of the helicopter, trying to get as much range as possible.

the problem is, ive tried forward flight recently, and when i do that the motor starts cutting out randomly, and sometimes i loose control. it never happens in a hover, so it cant be a loose connection or somthing like that.

ill put my old (full range, and ppm) reciever on my heli next time i go to a field, then ill know if it is getting interferance, because instead of just having the motor cut out (which could be a diffrent problem), it will jump over the sky instead  . not the best situation to try to put my helicopter into, but im running out of ideas here.
but i will know: if it does get interferance, i know my reciever has no problems, but if it dosent get interferance, then i have a faulty reciever.

I've never had a glitch with my setup in this heli. I don't run a ferrite ring on my ESC to Rx cable but I did make sure to keep all the radio stuff well away from the motor stuff when I dressed down the wires.
