Some calc with 61T main gear
Gear ratio will be the following:
14T=13.99
15T=13.05
16T=12.24

I'm going the Z30 1100 5S route at the moment Bob... using 2 x 5S 2200 (20C) packs in parallel which I hope will mount well to the existing hardpoints. These weigh in at 600g which is about 150g more than my existing 2 x FP 3S 2150 arrangement which I think will sort out my CG problem (I put my tail servo on the boom using Century Swift p-clips).
My calculations suggest 15T or 16T on the 42T main gear... now I just need to find some pinions. Any ideas on the module of these since I want to source them in the UK and only got the stock 14T in my kit. Either the module, or have you got any from other heli pinions in your extensive collection that look like they fit? :)
For information, the Century 600+ is definitely the Z30 1100kV, as is the Thunder Tiger Ripper Outrunner Heli OBL 43/11-30H. I believe there are some subtle revision changes between the 3, with the latest Z30A being the best, but all are made by Z Power, have the same winding and dimensions/weight.
I have yet to receive mine yet, but I've just opted for the Ripper since its about $20 cheaper than the Z30 or Century variants... I may yet get a nasty reminder to stop being a cheap skate - but we'll see :)

Piranha - how do you get the motor to direct drive onto main gear ? I assume thats what you mean by using 61t ??
Learning lots from this forum - new to heli and have recently bought hurricane - not completed yet .
Thanks

No no, no direct drive! Jus use 61t gear instead of 42 one

To clarify what Piranha says, you take the front gear out (the one that the motor pinion meshes with)... see Bob's video to show how to remove this.
Once out, unbolt the black plastic gear from the metal carrier, and then buy a replacement rear 61T gear.
The bolt pattern to mount this rear gear to the carrier is identical, you just have to reset your motor position and mesh. At the end of this procedure you have 2 x 61T gears in the heli... front and rear, rather than 42T front and 61T rear.
Once the 61T front is mounted, it then allows a different set of ratios for using higher kV motors, or lower kV ones with more cells.

Skaross, PLEASE let us know how this combo works out! I wont be able to test stuff until weekend after next as I am going to the Toledo RC show this weekend.... I LOVE hearing how people test and use power systems and this for sure is a heli that has many choices....
THANKS for sharing!
Piranha, so what you running right now on the 61T gear?

Bob, unfortinatelly my bird now is waiting for parts from Asia (my EMS package is somwhere between Taiwan and Moscow more then a week :( )
So there are metall head upgrade and all availiable pinions and main gears, Im planing to test 15 and 16t first, then will think about new motor!
Also what do you think about batteries? I am planing to pick up a couple of 21503S 20C FP (there is no 3s 2500 in Moscow)
Also Im waiting for DeWalt36V pack, also somwhere in between postoffice and my place

Piranha, the latest packs from FP are 2170 25C packs and they are actually lighter than the older 20C 2150's. GREAT packs!
Sorry to hear about the wait for parts :( Mine probably would have had a hardware problem had it not been for you tipping me off to some of the issues :)
I thank you!
I hope you get your parts soon!

We have both been running plastic grips since day one, both on mine and my friends. No problem at all. I´ve acctualy only heard of one misshap with the plastic blade grips, and that was one guy that had tighten them wrong with the bolt.
But I will for sure keep an eye on them. I allready have all the upgrades, but will not mount them untill I need to :D

So what does that make the overall ratio?

Bob, thanks for the excellent review. Love the build videos :D
Guys, I'm very interested on this heli but I have not figured out which servo to use. I'm not into 3D, just a dependable/economic servo for sports flying. These are the servos I have in mind, would greatly appreciate any other recommendations!!
Futabas: 3010, S148, S3301, S3004
Hitecs: HS425BB, HS475HB Karbonite
BTW, if anyone is interested; Trextuning will do a review on the "downgrade" package in the coming month or so......
Happy flying!!

Hi nieves50,
Could you explain "downgrade" package to me please? Never heard of it, It just sounds so stupid. lol
Thanks,

I think he means the "shrink" kit that has a shorter boom and belt for 475mm blades. I have one here to try as i feel it suits this airframe better than the 500+ blades.

Aah o.k. thanks ozace.
I heard about that one.

Anyone been able to compare pinions off other brand heli's to see if the module matches? It's been proposed that they're 1.0 module, in which case I think Century ones work... could someone with a few different helis (Bob? :) ) offer a pinion or 2 up to the main gear and give me a match?
Flight on the Align ESC in governor mode today... stock motor and 2 x 3S FP 2150s. Medium timing, mid cut off, governor/soft-start mode, lowest speed setting. Head speed well down on the smoked CC80 ESC in governor... felt a much more sluggish heli.
Need to up my ESC to high timing and retry, but my gut feeling is the lack of speed adjustment on the Align gov mode will require a 15T pinion on the stock motor.
For those that don't know, CC allows adjustment of head speed in gov by changing the throttle curve... Align ESC is just a fixed value irrespective of TX curve (you put the TX at 75-85 and it just works).
Thanks

You can find out the module pitch by measuring the O.D.
Diameter divided by the number of teeth plus two equals the module pitch.
The pitch of an imperial gear is done by adding two to the number of teeth and dividing by the OD. although it's unlikely to be imperial pitch.

pitch is .6 like the robbe eolo and quick heli's
edit - looks like i am wrong according to post further down

I´m pretty sure GAUI has made a special piniong with 0.8 module on this heli.

Just measured the diameter of the 14T stock pinion off the heli and its 12.75mm.
Using module = diameter / (pinion teeth + 2) formula from Bikeracer, this gives 0.796... allowing for rounding and none perfect measurement of diameter, a module of 0.8... this ties in with Prolle-gbg's value.
Guess I'll be ordering the stock parts from HK or TW after all... bummer :(

Well I just ordered my 550 from http://www.backman-rc-expert.com/
Per is a good guy to deal with no BS and no sales pitch.
It should be a fun build, this will be my second heli.
I have read alot of post from various sites and they all point to Finless at Helifreak
for a good detailed build video and expert advice.
I decided on the 550 because parts are easy to get even though the LHS
does not carry them. According to Per from backman-rc-expert
1 week would be the longest lead time for a part ordered.
I was going to order the E-Smart but I can not find anyone supporting this
ship there is maybe one or two blogs that I read but the parts support is not there.
I did like the frame it was made of metal but Per tells me that a CF
upgrade should be coming out soon for the 550 + many CNC parts.
I look forward in bugging all of you Pro's for advice on this new Heli.
I plan on spending many sleepless nights assembling and dreaming of my first flight.

I fly my Hurricane with a stock motor and with the Align speed control set at high timing.
In this configuration it flies very well. I land my heli before the batteries get low between 5:15 and 5:45 and put 1.5 to 1.7 MAH back into the packs.
Bob,
I have worked with a friend of mine who has been flying his Hurricane with an Align 600L motor. The first several flights he flew it this way it had scary head speed and we did not throw any blades. Later he flew it with a 61 tooth forward gear and 550 mm carbon blades. We went through several main gears and even bowed the main blade bolts but never had a failure of blade grips. So the grips are strong. The weak part seems to be the gears when pushing this thing to the limits. I have pictures of a striped gear and bowed bolts are in my gallery.

The 9254 servo is only rated at 5V, but the Align BEC puts out 5.8V. The little drop down reg reduces this to 5V for the 9254 only.
The majority of other servos work fine at 5.8V (in fact work quicker and at a higher torque) but you should check these. The reg. is mainly for servos designated specifically for heli tails.
