Hi Guys,
I got the Hurricane build and test flew it 2 times already :D I like it a lot. It's my first "bigger" size heli. I was only used to the 450 size..man impressive.
Even the build was fun. It's nice to be able to work with slightly larger tools and parts for a chance lol. Normally with the little heli's i spend a fair amount of time on my hands and knees looking for tiny nuts and bolts :YeaBaby:
But i still have work todo and some questions...
Like the ball links..man they are tight!!!. I need to get a ball sizing tool. And get some plastic raptor links. Do they fit better over the balls by default then the gui links???
Else i change all links for the raptor ones (maybe use raptor balls as well if they fit better by default)
And i need servo wheels...man they are hard to get overhere. Can someone suggest me a shop where I can order them?? i'm using the DS821 servo's that came with the dx7 set.
First upgrade will be CF blades. I never liked woodies on the 450 and 300 size heli's...and now it's the same for the hurricane. I got 2 sets. First set wouldnt track at all, even after i balanced them. Second set is o.k. At least no tracking issues.
For now i'm very happy with it :D
thanks for the video's again Finless !!!
b.t.w. The canopy and other parts were not pre-painted like yours. All was white, check the picture with my 2 son's holding the hurricane and my hdx450 :D

hi chaps, for people looking for the round horn wheel similar to the ones Finless used in his build videos, you can get the hitec 1/4 scale servo horns from Tower, they have the same hole pattern as the JR large wheels in the video. well at least it looks very much the same in the video and from what i've put on my hurricane
i got some for myself and it matched perfectly when I used the same holes that Finless used. I used Hitec servos though, not sure if they're gonna work on JR, but they're 2 bucks a pop so worth trying if anyone's having a hard time looking for the JR wheels

hope that helps!

I used these wheels they come with adaptors for the jr servos and the metal wheel gives you lots of options to drill new holes to meet the angles they are a little larger but look cool on my heli

No, Bob. You will not get binding if you have same offset on both wheels. The thing is, you can put the balls on the "inside" of the center line, just look a this picture of my setup.
I DID try that and is did not work for me at all.... Take one link off and then throw full pitch and about 50% aileron. Now try to put that other link back on. The angles dont come out right when you move past about 45 degrees.

I Hitec splines are different than JR so those wont work... Trust me I tried!

i've been thinking about the setup issue... i was wrong, you do get binding, but i did not see it as it is very small when mounting the balls the way i did it. my APOLOGIES to you bob... i checked my setup, and there's a small amount of difference in movement of the arms, causing binding at the endpoints of servo travel.
i feel kind of stupid now... but i've learned my lesson.

No problem! Thats what we are all here for.... So share thoughts, ideas, and our experiences.... No stupidity man... You tried to solve a design problem and gave it a go :)
I tried the same thing thinking it would work as in my mind I saw no reason it wouldnt until I tried it! Good minds think alike ;)
Anyway I wish they had never designed it for an offset like that. It is used on Airplanes for push pull cable systems to get rid of slacking cables on the push side. The natural stretch of cables allows you to have a binding like that but keeps the cables tight. Doesnt work on helis!

I will ask here,
I know the 600 plus motor makes great power.
But has anyone tried a
Neu 1907/2YF
or
1512/1.5Y
thanks

Maurice,
Well, what I did was first measure the balls that came with the 550 and from what I can tell they are 4.7mm. So, I ambled down to my LHS and picked up a pack of the new stainless TRex balls with screws and used those everywhere. Did not have to size a single link and they are smooth as a baby's behind. :D

Hmm.. the problem with powerfull motors and gears might just be over.
Maybe there is no need for Delrin gears after all?
Look whats comming to town :mrgreen:
Why is it that this picture appears to be inverted or wrong or perhaps weird or maybe the plate is just assembled wrong. But to me it looks like the new bearing setup is coming out the wrong side.
And why is it that you always show up with these nifty new things and then we never see them available?
Just sort of curious.

Carl, Tom is a distributor for these helis and a very good relationship with the factory. Thats why he has all the goodies first.

I'll expect you to show it flying to me pretty soon!

Hey guys, maybe I'm stupid, but what is the advantage of the upgrade??? How does it solve the problem of gear wearing??? As far as I understand the main gear us stripping by motor gear but not autorotation gear, am i right????
Yesterday a friend of mine had tested the bird with z30 1050(or 1100kV, I don't remember) And strip the gear during the second fly switching from normal to Idle up mode :(
Also I have Z20 1700kV motor but I'm afraid to use it due to extremely high kV but maybe it would be ok with 7S A123 setup with 14T and 61T gears???
And Maurice, Welcome on board of Hurricane :hug:

ozace,
Thanks much for that info and that would explain his getting all the 'kewl :glasses2: ' goodies and upgrades afore we do.

Hi,
The advantage of the new motor-installation-metal-thing is that you get rid of the flex that appears on the main shaft when putting extreme power onto it. As it is designed now you will "bend" the main shaft making the backlash between piniong and main gear bigger than "on ground".. This is certainly one reason for stripping gears with Z30.
However, I have a Z30 on my hurricane and I have "only" stripped 3 gears on 120 flights! So your buddy had extremely bad luck or his backlash between pinong and main gear was to big.. I have stripped my gears during tictocs..
Have a nice day!

Piranha.
I also have a Z20 1700Kv, I have been running on 61t/14/ but I thought everything got to hot, ECS specially, so I putted on a Z20 1470 and it runs much cooler
What’s you’re opinion on this motor, if use a 5S lipo it would give a 2200 HS which is enough.
How many amps do your hurricanes use/minute?
Mine uses around 32A to 38A

Hi Guys
Finally finished my Hurricane with all Bobs mods. Had 2 great flights - I love it. On the 3rd flight the esc cut after 1 min. I had just enough power to glide it down luckily (I'm not to good at autos yet!). The 1st 2 flights were pretty gentle, but the 3rd was full power so I guess the esc cant handle it.
I've ordered a new Tower Pro 70amp Mag8 esc from Hong Kong so I wont fly it again till I get that. Hopefully that will do the job. Has anyone tried this esc?
I think I must have one of the 1st batch of esc's so I'm going to contact Gaui for a replacement - have any of you guys had any luck getting a replacement from Gaui?
Cheers Simon

I have one of the earliest ESC with separate BEC, have over 40 flights and no problem, often I fly till the Lipo warning starts on the ESC, but have never experienced any problem so far, around where I live there are quite a few Hurricane pilots, but I have not heard anyone with ESC problems though.

Yea Patrick... I dont get it... No cut outs for me either! My flying videos show that...... I wish I could figure out WHY that is happening to others :dontknow

:dontknow :dontknow
I would like to find out why? I plan to use my 600+ from my Swift with this ESC as after flying it myself I kind of trust it... May not be the best ESC out there but I want to see its possibilities!

Tom Viper has recorded up to 80amps in peak, and several peaks up to 75amps!
Bob, what do you thing of running on a Z20 1700KV and a 5S 4000mA battery pack
15t on the motor and 61t on second, that should work ok?
Finless
05-08-2007, 06:44 AM
Well here is the math
Stock gearing
14T = 9.63
15T = 8.98
16T = 8.42
61T main gear
14T=13.99
15T=13.05
16T=12.24
So 1700 KV motor with 61 gear and 15T
1700x22.2V = 37740 rpm
Devide by 13.05 gear ratio and head speed is37740/13.05 = 2,891 head speed
The head speed is very high and you wont be in that motors best power band. The 14T would be better but that motor might be a little overkill for this heli.
This is based on raw calculations though so your milage may vary but I kind of think the KV range for this heli is 1000-1400....

Most head speed calculators Ihave seen use a 80 - 85% efficiency factor, which would put the head speed in the 2400 - 2500 rangs.
