My bottom line question, Hurricane or Swift?
Finless
04-08-2007, 09:23 AM
Tuff one.... I think over time I am going to like the hurricane better. The swift with the 600+ motor has plenty of power and a very fast head. THus out of the box stock it flys better right now. BUT I think with the right motor etc the hurricane will be a better heli...

very interesting read here.
so this would be in between the 450 and the 600?
am i right to assume that with a Y connector i can use my 450 packs?

Thats what you saw me fly it with! I got 5-6 minutes.
I figure if I get a different motor (or go larger pinion) and kick up the head speed the flight time will drop.
I am thinking 6S 3300 packs or 5S 3700 packs once I get to the power I want.
First thing I am going to try is get a 15T and 16T pinion and try them. I know head speed will be up but may still be a little boggy.... If it is time to go motor shopping :)
FYI... if you plan to get the head speed up to say 2100 or so then I reccomend the metal head and grips.

Bob,
If you are running 2-4 you are in the governor mode according to the Email I got from SAE and posted here. Of course if you are running 100% across the board in stunt I doubt it would change anything. It seems like I get just a little more power out of the Align ESC, but I have not done any testing to verify this.

X-30.... I dont know what Email ytou got but that is not what my manual says and in fact it didnt sound like gov mode to me...
Here is what my manual says
Flying Mode The following section is flying mode setting. This section offers 4 options. They are Airplane, Glider and Helicopter without Governor/with Governor. The motor will come up the corresponding tones as indicator. The following is the indication with graphic reference.
Aircraft ♪♪-♪
Glider ♪♪-♪♪
Helicopter with Governor ♪♪-♪♪♪
Helicopter without Governor (Factory Default) ♪♪-♪♪♪♪
When intending to choose one of above options, simply push throttle stick from minimum/stop to maximum/full throttle after the indication tone, then pull throttle stick back to the minimum/stop position to confirm after the acknowledge tone. Shutdown the power, and now the speed controller is ready to fly.

Bob,
Here it is again straight from SAE.
I don’t know if this is right, but it is what they sent. I could pick on this guy’s English, but it is a hell of a lot better than my Chinese.

Hi Dave
There have a new instrction in the attached, we find one mistake on "flying mode" the helicopter with governor should be after helicopter without governor.
o Aircraft (Factory Default) ??-?
o Glider ??-??
o Helicopter without Governor ??-???
o Helicopter with Governor ??-????
BTW, my english is not very well, might we have some problem on that, so if I make some thing wrong even understand the mean, please let's me know.
Thanks & Best Regards

Bob,
When I was using the Gaui speed control I had it programmed for no governor.
One of things that would indicate to me that I had lost my programming was a jump in head speed during normal hover before I would flip it into idle up. With this in mind I guess you could say that all my cutouts were in governor mode. I also had tried it in NI-NM in an attempt to eliminate the battery protection mode. Watching your flight videos it was nice to see that you did not have any of the issues that I had. Perhaps the new ESC that SAE sent me will work just fine, but I am going to try it on a plank first anyway.

So far I have flown my Hurricane on three different sets of batteries.
A set of Mega power 2200s, TP Prolite 2100s and a set of Max Amps 2100 HVs.
While it flies well on all three, the Max Amps have noticeably more punch!
On this heli the right batteries makes quite a difference when you throw the collective to it.
I took two flights today; the first was for 5:38 and put 1.67 amps into the Megas
The second flight was more energetic and after flying 5:15 I only put 1.49 amps into the Max Amps.

Hi Bob,
Just wanted to say thanks for the build vids. My Hurricane is being delivered tommorow, so your vids will be very useful. I fly a Trex450, an Ark X400 & a Concept Ep. Can't quite afford a Trex600 yet, so the Hurricane looks perfect for me & I get to use my Trex lipos which keeps the cost down. Looking at your vids, it looks like a great machine.
Cheers Simon

Bob, when you have the time, put on a Z20 KV1470, or a Z30 KV1100...
Any of the above motors will put a big smile on your face. With these motors the Hurricane sticks out at the field. When people hear my friends Z30 KV1100 equiped hurricane switch on idleup2 (90%), they land and watch... Thats respect! :noteworthy
I am still happy with my 5S Z20, great power and duration. I must say, that tic-tocs has never been this easy!

Is the Z30 1100 that same as the Century 600 Plus? If so maybe Bob could borrow it from his Swift for some testing.

Tom Viper,
I was thinking about trying the Z-POWER Z20-KV980 motor on 6s.
Has anyone tried one of these?

X30 pilot,
OK I tried 2-3 and it sucked and I got cut outs!!!! I have to say it sure felt like it was in GOV mode with 2-3 as it cut out when I unloaded the head... BAM cut but would come back if you waited.... Scary... I switched back to 2-4 and all problems went away. So I am not sure GAUI is correct ont he settings... I suggest if anyone is having cut out to program for 2-4.... I put in 4 flights today and now I am ready to pump it up!
Tom, how many cells on the Z30-1100? Also do you know what head speed and pinions etc for these motors?
Thanks,
Bob

Bob,
Thank you very much for trying this out! That is great information to know.
I never had a chance to unload the head during cut outs as I was desperately trying to get the heli back on the ground in one piece.
I’ll Email SAE and tell them to update the instructions to show 2-3 as the helicopter auto destruct mode.

Bob,
From your comments above it looks like your still running the Li-Po mode (1-1) for battery management. Is this correct?
I have been flying in 2-3 and had the speed reduction after around 3 minutes until I switched the speed control to mode 1-2 for Ni-MH cutoff. Also I flew today without the eagle tree and without the head speed variations I was seeing in an earlier post (mode 1-2 and 2-3). However it may still be in governor mode, but it was not changing like before.
Thanks,
Huey

Hey Bob.
Any plans on running the GAUI short boom, short belt & blades (475mm) on this one? Wondering if the flight times and performance would improve. I have a bunch of TREX 450 packs but 5 min. flights are a little dissapointing. Thanks!!

Hey Bob,
Based on your experience with the Align 450/600 can you give an educated guess on heli selection between the Align 500/600 and the Hurricane 550 based on a these criteria? ( I know the 500 isn't out yet.. that's why I asked for a guess.)
Feel free to add models as you see fit. I'm currently saving for my next heli (probably winter 07 purchase). I'm even considering Nitro. With the Align 600 Nitro due out that may drive 600 parts prices down. Anyway..thanks in advance.
1. Repair and Maintenance Costs..ie blades..etc.. seems bigger birds require CF blades? which seem to drive costs.
2. Initial acquisition<sp?> costs
3. Battery costs
4. Setup and flying satisfaction
5. Special considerations..ie only certain servo's will fit..etc

The Z30 1100 works well with both 5S and 6S.
We use the stock pinion.
I am running 5S-4000mA, and my friend 6S and 2 x 3S2300mA.
Both are running 535mm carbons. And with these blades, they are an absolute dream to auto. Flight times on 5S are about 10min 3D style, on 6S2300 they are around 7-8min.
