Tom... head speeds man head speeds with this motor please?
What pinions / gears?

I will say that 7-8 minutes on 2300's doing 3D with higher heads speeds is almost unbelieveable? I was chatting with Andy Yu and the Trex500 will be lighter than this and swing 450mm blades. He said it is being design around using 2 TRex450 packs and they dont expect more than 6 minutes.......

My Swift is a little heavier than this running 6S 3700's and I only get 6 minutes of 3D.... I realize it is swinging 550mm blades but still....

So head speeds please on this Z30-1100, pinion used, gears used, etc would be helpful. After flying mine stock it's not just a power thing it's a head speed thing... To get the fast cyclic I want I am pretty sure head speed needs to be 2100 at a minimum (my swash is already MAXED out now). I am not looking for full punch out potential but the whole package ;)

Bob If you have a moment can you answer a possible simple question for a noobie
How do you wire the bec and seperate battery into the dx7 so that I have a redundent power source
Thanks

OK what RX are you using? That response will let me know how EASY it is or how much harder it is....

sorry I didn't answer sooner Bob
I am using the ar7000 reciever with the dx7 and the Guai Esc
I have the bec and battery that came with the heli and also the rx battery and switch that came with the dx7
I have the ds871 servos installed and a 401 w/futaba 9254 installed along with the dx7 switch and rx battery pack as per instructions for dx7
I was just looking thru the posts and saw that people like to run both the battery and bec but I was unable to locate some instruction to install both
Hopefully this helps and I will check back later
Thanks

OK this is easy... so you know ALL channel plugs on ANY RX have the positive and negative leads all connected in a BUSS BAR! So just plug the BEC into any open channel slot (I used AUX2) and it will power ther RX.... SUPER EASY!

Had it been using an AR6100 I would have told you to put the red and black wires of the BEC into the open pins holes on the 401 gyro gain plug (since there are no wires in it other than GAIN) but you dont need to do that since you have a open channel slot (aux2) on the AR7000.

okay that is too easy So If the bec is powering the rx from the main batteries the rx battery is just in standby till the battery power of the main packs is possible lost
am I correct or do they both provide power equally

Ummm no... the new GAUI ESC does NOT have a BEC... you should have gotten a separate BEC to power the RX... THIS DOES NOT run off the main pack! You need a 2S lipo pack to power the stand alone BEC.... I am using a 800ma 2S FlightPower pack myself....

Any chance on reviewing the Heli with shorter boom & blades?

Bob,

do you have a DVD for sale on the 550 build?

Finless

Dabian Dog will be working on DVD's soon..... Right now no.

As for a review on the shorter boom etc... I have no plans right now other than to get this heli up to the level of performance I WANT :)

Hey Bob. I noticed from your test flight, that the hurricane was a bit slow on the tail, at least for my liking. Would t-rex 600 blades fit the hurricane grips. You think it would help?

Tom Viper

Slow on the tail? If there is one thing the Hurricane is NOT, its slow on the tail!
You can have massive tail output if you like, but maybe Bob turned it down some?

The tail response of the Hurricane is the fastest I have ever tried on about 20-30 diffrent helicopters! Also, you can use a 401 gyro and have it hold the tail for fast backward flight, I have never been able to do this on my Raptors, TREX, Swifts, Logo's. On my Raptors I now run 502 and 611, and yes, they hold it where i want it, but not with the 401... And yes, I have set it up the right way, doing it mechanically first, then HH.

Well my rudder end points were set at 100 BUT it is slower on the tail than my Trex450 or 600... It is due mostly to the 1800 head speed... Once I get it up there I am sure it will be quick as Tom says.

one final mention and thanks Bob

so if I were to use the battery pack that was included with the reciever would that be the same or do I have to go thru the bec with the battery

Finless

No you would just hook up the micad pack directly to the RX and use the swtichj harness that came with the radio so you can yurn it on and off.
The BEC is only need to drop a 2 cell lipo down to the right voltage.

Me thinks:

Stock stetup + light weight + slow headspeed = affordable AP rig

Wonder how much weight it could carry? hmm

Thanks for the reply. It seemed slow on the video. I'm about to test flight my bird in a matter of 2-3 days and i'm just looking for what i might find problematic... before i takeoff.

Bob, have you set your rudder EPA to 140%?
On JR and spectrum radios this is needed to get the piro rate up on the 401 gyro.
If you keep it at 100%, you will get a slow tail.

Tuff one.... I think over time I am going to like the hurricane better. The swift with the 600+ motor has plenty of power and a very fast head. THus out of the box stock it flys better right now. BUT I think with the right motor etc the hurricane will be a better heli...

Bob

Thanks. I guess I will have to wait a bit for you to get it sorted and finally decide. :)

Tom, as I said no I havent yet but I plan to BUT FIRST I want to get a better power setup.

I have been doing a bunch of calculating and here is what I am going to try. Also Charlie from RotorWorkz and I will be working on carbon frame kit for this sucker :)

Anyway Here are my thoughts:
Align 600L motor on 4S 3700 packs
600L is a 1620KV motor
1620x14.8 volts = 23976 motor RPM now divide by 9.63 gear ratio = 2,489 head speed... A little high but nothing the throttle curve cant handle.

Century 600+ on 5S 3700 (Same motor as Z30-1100 so I am told).
1100KVx18.5 volts = 20350 motor RPM now divide by 9.63 gear ratio = 2,113 head speed... Actual I am sure will be more like 2000 head speed. Whould be interesting and might also try the 15T pinion on this which is a gear ration of 8.98 and a head speed of 2,266

Century 600+ on 6S 3700 (Same motor as Z30-1100 so I am told).
1100x22.2 volts = 24420 motor RPM now divide by 9.63 gear ratio = 2,535 head speed... Again high but nothing a throttle curve cant take care of however a 13T pinion might be the ticket here (10.37 gear ratio) and I wish GAUI made one. THis would give a head speed of 2,354 which is more reasonable.

I like the 6S idea and in fact smaller packs like FlightPower 2500's might be perfect! I will probably try the 600+ motor on 6S first.

FYI for your calculations here are the gerar ratios with the 3 available pinions from GAUI
14T = 9.63
15T = 8.98
16T = 8.42

So Tom with your friends Z30-1100 on 6S I can see why it turns heads :) Thats some big head speed at 25K.... I think you said he had his curve at 90% so assume maybe around 2300? Is he running the plastic grips with 535mm blades on this? That has me a little concerned..... Those grips are THIN....

Anyway just to share what I will be experamenting with after I return from the Toledo show!

Bob, you also can try 61T(rear)gear instead of 42main, it gives you more space for experiment ;)
