Many thanks to Finless for his build videos and too all who have contributed to the Hurricane 550 threads. This is my first heli so I the information here has been great.

I got the idea for the flouro orange colour scheme from an earlier post, it looks great in the sun - very visable.
I also wanted to run 3200mah lipo's so again got the idea for the battery bracket from here, mine is aluminium with holes drilled in it to keep the weight down. She is still quite nose heavy, even with the long tail. I added 50grams of lead solder to the tail to get her level. Another option might be to mount the receiver battery out on the tail some how. Then I could shed the 50grams of lead.
Still getting the feel of her on the ground - doing Radds training. If it stops raining I'll head out to the field tomorrow and hopefully get her airborn!

Hey Greame

Welcome to HF

Like your Batt mounting plate nice job

Looks like you did a great job on your first Heli build
Just be careful those tie wraps arnt to tight on your cables dont want to chafe through them in flight!

Good luck

Ben

those of you running the Z30A...how well does it fit with the canopy?

It doesn't - you need to trim the canopy. You will also (probably) need to use the 50t or 60t gear instead of the 'old' 42t... The z30 is fatter and will not fit between the aeleron and roll arms unless it is 'pushed' further out by using a bigger gear.

This is my experience with a CF frame... not sure that the plastic frame would be any different.

i was afraid of that...i really dont want to trim the canopy as it is the fiberglass version and im not sure how to cut it without wrecking it...

to cut a hole in the fibre glass shell
clearly mark where you want to cut,
Chain drill about 5mm inside your marked lines to remove majority of material,
then use sandpaper wrapped round large dowel to carefullly sand down to your marked line or better yet a sanding drum on a dremel tool or similar will make very short work of it.

its actually very easy.

Hope that helps

Ben

Dremmel with a sanding 'barrel'.. wear a face mask and goggles. Works a treat and you can get exactly the shape that you want.

here's my birds. i left the lamav4 out of the shot, as it's mostly a toy. the hurricane canopy i painted a couple weeks ago. nothing fancy, just rattle-can'd it. i've got a new airbrush i've been waiting to use, but i had a couple cans of pactra that was getting really old. i'll be sure to post up a pic when i do manage to find time to shoot a good canopy.

In 8 weeks I will get this. http://www.rc-expert.com/product-package.php?pid=662 is it worth it?

Hi Hawk

IN MY OPINION!

There are a few problems with that package.

I would prefere a DX7 compared to a 6EX

The 2200 18c batts will last a bout 30 seconds with the Gaui 1100 KVA motor it will eat them in no time at all.
The 808B charger is limited to 5 cells wont be able to balance charge both 3 cell packs at the same time like many recent chargers.

Good points are the CNC head and carbon frame
GY401 gyro and 9254 servo (doesnt mention if kit includes a step down voltage regulator for use with this servo)

You should check out Flying Hobby for some good deals and Fung will even put togther a custom package for you if you contact him.

Suggestions for alternative parts would be
DX7 Better than Futaba 6EX
standard spectrum servos (if your not an advanced pilot they will be just fine)
Z20 980 motor (very efficient will be gentler on your lipos and give extended flight times)
Align 75amp ESC (better than the Gaui with very nice soft start)
Bantam BC6 or similar charger (AC/DC) (good value)
Many balance chargers out there that can balance charge two 3 cell li po packs at the same time to cut down on charge time.

I would also consider 25C 2500 packs as a minimum, 3300 size packs seem to be just right for me giving me a safe 7 min flight

These upgrades or additions will cost you a little more up front but will last you for much longer as you grow.

Hope this helps

Ben

Agree with Ben about most things there - although the standard 50a Gaui ESC is fine for the std motor, also don't forget the CNC levers for pitch, aileron and elevator plus the updated motor mount and shaft if not included.

Cheers,
Mike.

First of all, special thanks to Finless Bob for his build videos and to all freaks who have contributed to the Hurricane 550 threads. Because this is my first rc-heli it was very helpful to get a lot of tipps, tricks and setups for this heli.

Thanks a lot!!! :clappp

Here we go... (again)

After a bad crash last week I finished my Hurricane 550 today, so I took some fotos to post it here before crashing again!!!

Original Gaui 50A esc explode during the last crash  but I didn't want to buy a new 50A esc so I bought a new Jazz 80 from Kontronik and a BL600XL outrunner from Align with KV1700!!
I will use a 61t maingear with 13t pinion to get a headspeed of 2600 rpm.
So I did a few uprgades on my rotorhead too as cnc-maingrips for the higher headspeed.
Now I'm using RCP II 500 carbon mainblades, and I hope they fly as good as they are looking!!

I also wanted to run 3200mah 30C lipo's from FlightPower without putting some extraweight on tail, so I can't use such as a battery bracket to get perfect central gravity.

The new lightweight plastic canopy became orange and racing-white with original decals because I think it is very visible in sky.

So when the wind stops again I will run to the field to test my new setup and I hope that I'll be able to control!! :fly:
