View Full Version : I have extra server PSUs if interested

Hi,

I'm a data center admin by day, and just decommissioned a bunch of servers to free up rack space. They're end of line, so parts get stupid expensive, and I can't gurantee I could get replacement parts within 24 hours so they're moved to other systems that have support contracts.

If this is considered spamming the board, please delete and please forgive me.

All the equipment was running fine when I powered it off. I might have an oppertunity to salvage some of the PSUs in them if anyone's interested. They're great for modding, I've taken enough for myself, plus a few spares. But could possibly get a half dozen or so more. Up to maybe 16, but any more is pushing it.

I took a look at shipping, that would probably be the clincher. It will cost me about $25 to ship a pair within Canada, about $30 to ship a pair to Boston (only zip code I had off hand for a quote)... probably not *too* much more anywhere else.

If anyone's interested, I'll see what I can get. The ones I like the most come from an IBM x346 series server. I like them because they're about 47A and the fan is swichable to high if it starts to get warm. It's not automatic, but at least it's switchable. There's some bigger Dell's and some smaller Dell's, but I know I could get at least a half dozen of that IBM one. The Dell's might just be one pair here and there.

I don't really want to just post them in the 'forsale' area because if someone's not already looking in here... I don't know if I want to get blamed for them messing with a 40+A PSU that I sold them

My other worry is that I know they're OK, and I can test their 12V output before I send them, but if someone says it's DOA then it's going to cost more to ship than what I'd probably ask for a single PSU.... logistically it may be more trouble than it's worth.

I don't sell used stuff to make money! If I can cover my costs, cool. Just to be up front, there is going to be some effort involved, not much but some. I would have to strip them out of the servers they're in, map the pins, test the output voltage, package them up and ship them off. I think it's reasonable to ask for $25/PSU for that, plus shipping. Shipping rates sort of suggest they should be sold in pairs.

They're selling for about $50, some people are asking almost $200 for them... my intent is not to make money. If it was, I wouldn't have opened my mouth here :)

Anyway, let me know, and delete or tell me to bugger off if this is inappropriate.

If there's interest, and we can consider it more of a 'group buy', I'm happy to do what I can.

Check these out, the same power supplies for $79 shipped, yours will sell fast for the price you are thinking. If they test ok when you ship them, that is all that you need to worry about. What are the chances of it going DOA from the time of shipping to arrival.

Thanks backburner,

That's the one. I'm going to hook a pair up in series this weekend if I can get the time, just to make sure I can without any difficulties. Its a nice PSU and love that the fan is switchable low/high. I only found the fan pin the other night, up to then I had it constant high.

I'll go in this weekend and start harvesting some if I can get the time. I'm working stupid hours as it is this week, so if I can take a break for an hour or so I could strip down a few. I'm there already.... :)

I did some more digging on postal rates... Cheapest rate through the post office is $30+taxes to Texas. If I just said flat rate $30/pair it would probably all even out in the end

It's not $5 cheaper to only send a single so, pairs make the most sense.

I can send them a bit cheaper through UPS, but UPS said the recipient should expect to get a brokerage charge of $25...

That all sounds like the USPS and UPS are blowing smoke up your.... Post dimensions and weights for the boxes, I want to see how much they would charge. When I bought my PSU's from Feathermerchant, they came USPS priority, and cheap.

Note that I'm in Canada though... I used CanadaPost's online rate calculator and got $28.60 plus tax to Texas, $19 and tax to west coast Canada.

With a delcared value under $100, 99% of the time it won't get a duity charge. Canada Post doesn't charge for brokerage, just duity and taxes.

I used 13"x6"x6" 7lbs for 2 PSUs. Each one is about 3lbs so I added an extra for good measure.

UPS said sometimes the recipient will get charged a brokerage fee on ground shipments, sometimes they won't, but the recipient should 'expect' one...

Hey guys,

I did end up picking up a bunch and still have some left.

Wiring these up in series couldn't be easier. There's 1 'security screw' the torx with the post in the center that holds the case together to the AC ground. I drilled the center out with a 5/64th bit and used a 2mm hex to take the security screw out, put heatshrink over the end of the ground and wired them up for +12 and +24

The PSUs are 625W at 12V so they're actually 52A each

the fan is switchable low/high when makes it tolerable when I've got the load light.

I 'found' a security driver for the ground screw so if anyone else wants these, I can replace one of the security screws with a standard screw to make it easier to isolate the ground for series wiring.
