View Full Version : Lower Headspeed?

O.K guy's, Im a sissy

I would like to run my Dragonus headspeed (A lOT) lower than the norm (2500?)

Say around 15/1600. I just don't know how to setup C.C.P.M to accomplish this. ( flew the old stuff and just got back in)

I took her out in the backyard today for the maiden flight and although I have flown gassers/nitro's in the past I have always run lower headspeeds and feel MUCH more comfortable that way.

I am running an 11tooth pinion and I think 100% throttle at full stick
(I don't know what I am at at half stick throttle wise)

This little guy gave me a heart attack!!!

It sounded like my wifes blender on crack!

(I don't/won't fly 3D,just cruise around and will be a LONG time before I do anything other than just loop).

I know the normal setup is 0deg pitch at half throttle and 11deg.pos/11neg. on the T-Rex/Dragonus.

But I used to run 5deg at midstick on my other birds and was happy with the lower headspeeds and I would like to keep it that way on the Dragonus.

I would like to shoot for 2deg. neg low stick/5deg. mid and 10 or 11 at high stick. And around 1500 headspeed if possible?

Back in the day before C.C.P I did not have much probs. (remember "Heliboys"....LOL!)

can someone shoot me an idea on setting up for this kind of flying with the Dragonus?

I really need some help on this one guy's as I am now again a Newb :?

Thanks

Hey,

Unfortunately I dont think you'll really be able to get much lower than 2500 at best, not because you cant exactly but due to the smaller models requiring much higher head speeds to fly well. These little heli's love rotor speed and are so much more locked in and smoother nearer the 300rpm mark

What may look and sound fast is infact perhaps quite sedate in the real world, you see it is the blades tip speed we need to look at.
As the rotor disk is quite small, as you can imagine compared to your large models the Dragonus's tip speeds will only match that of a 90for instance if ran at higher than normal speeds.

My own Dragonus is running the 14t pinion & a 3013kv motor at 100% efficiency runs a head speed of 3121rpm. Once you have taken into account any losses this is probably nearer 3000rpm, but the model is very happy at this.
A freind of mine, perhaps much like yourself and in his early stages of flying still found the model much better with a higher head speed, mentioning like I have about it feeling more locked in and steady.

I would try to get used to the rpm you have, or a little higher preferably around the 2800 mark and the model will go well for you.
If you do want to experiment going lower on the head speed, I am lead to believe that Align pinions fit so you could go for less teeth count for an experiment. But I think you'll find the machine handles horribly, but I'd be interested to know.

Coolice,

Much thanks man,

I will get used to it, I guess mainly I invision the impact on the little guy when I dork it in

The one thing I find hilarious about me "just starting" back into helis is that I was once a field rep for Miniture Aircraft and then later Kyosho (GreatPlanes).

Time to get humbled again.............LOL!

Hell, In those day's (and now) the only "3D" I could fly was on the way down trying to keep from crashing!

Much thanks

Hey Mate,

No worries, your welcome.

I totallyu agree with what your saying when it comes to the smaller heli's rotor rpm, it is quite intimidating especially close in. I wouldn't worry to much though about excess damage caused in a crash, as with any heli large or small if you can get the power off the head as soon as possible it limits the damage caused. With electric this is quite easy to do as well.

I have spanked mine once, was 3d'ing low down when I had a glitch, so I immediately dropped the power and let it go in. Main blades survived all ok, only parts I had to replace were main shaft, feathering spindle & boom. Frames split a little but not so much that I couldn't keep using them and indeed I am still flying them. Also the canopy, which I taped up with clear sellotape as I was at a fly in.

Chat soon.
