View Full Version : Which Hatori pipe for rear facing engine?

For a rear facing engine, should I use the SAB-12 or the 942? The SAB-12 looks like it would hang out toward the tail too far unless the engine is mounted forward facing. The 942 looks like it would be more centered. Does anyone know if the 942 will fit on the Spectra (on Ricks site, it says for predator gasser)? Also, is there any difference between these two pipes other than the location of the mount?
Thanks!

I wasn't aware there were two versions of this muffler. We helped develop this muffler and all the ones I have seen have the mounting closer to the center. There is still quite a bit of muffler behind the motor though.

You can see on this (http://www.ronlund.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=heli&Category_Code=Muffler_Gas) page that there are two, and one has the mounting closer to the center than the other one. I believe that the one with the mounting closer to the center is the 942 (I'm not completely sure of this though).
EDIT:
Also found this (http://hatori-models.co.jp/htdocs/data_e/2-3.html) link with Hatori part numbers.

One is designed for the Predator Gasser, it has the mount more toward the the middle. The Spectra model has it more toward the end. I talked to Ron Lund about this a couple weeks ago and they definitely have two versions of the new Hatori Gas Muf/Pipe. Still waiting on my MA version, I think they have plenty of the Predator models in stock but none of the MA ones yet...

HeliProz has the MA version (SAB-12) in stock. However, looking at the pictures I think that it is the one with the mounting more towards the front (therefore, it would leave more of the muffler hanging out towards the tail if used with a rear facing engine). Does anyone know if the other one (with the mount closer to the center) will work with the Spectra?
Thanks,
DK

Here is the two versions of the Hatori muffler for the Zenoah engines

The above the inlet is 62mm from the front end

The above the inlet is 81 mm from the front end

The SAB-12 I received from HeliProz has the inlet 62mm from the front of the muffler. Looks like I got the wrong one (for a rear facing engine). Hmmmmmm?? :dontknow

Gee, I never knew there were two versions. I got the SAB-12 and have a rear facing engine. Good to know, but too late for me. It does't look like there are any canopy clearance issues with the 942.

Can contact Hatori USA and Richard can probably get the gas muffler that has the inlet 82 mm back from the front also.
Here is the email addy.

I've got the other (81 mm back) one as it is the Original designed for/by Minair. There were two models except I don't think that it is realized that both of them were marketed as mine was expected to be only a proto-type..
Either of them work equally as well on the Spectra-G model.

How about on the SE John? If I get the 81mm back, will I need to cut my SE Canopy more? I know the 62mm worked great with no cutting.
Thanks in advance!!

where is it coming loose? between the spacer and engine or between the spacer and muffler or both?
try tightening the muffler parts, while the engine is hot. Be careful, everything on this get VERY hot.
when the engine is broken in, the fuel should settle down, as long as you have the mixture settings right

couple of suggestions:
try putting one of the metal exhaust gaskets from the original muffler between the cylinder and the spacer to see if that works. Its not aluminum so it expands at a different rate.
If it doesn't, then you might do what Hatori has done on the latest version of the muffler: drill & tap two holes the spacer where the bolts go through, and tighten up a couple of set screws on top of the bolts. This keeps them from turning.
There are a couple of things working on this. The motor has a certain amount of vibration and the aluminum is expanding with the heat.
let me know if the gasket helps.
