So I'm a little confused on the size notation that's used for this sport. I have a TRex 450SEv2, and know about how big that is, but how does that fit in the range of sizes. I've heard of a .30 size, .60, .90, but have no idea what units those are in. I've heard that the sizes are related to rotor length, but that clearly doesn't apply to the TRex.

Next, how big are the common helis around, like the Hirobo, etc.?

it is a bit confusing, the smaller electrics are sized by blade length, although not necessarily every time. The 450 is a class I can't define as the blades are 325mm, but the 600's have 600mm blades. Internal Combustion choppers are sized by displacement: .30- has a .30ci engine, 50 has a .50ci engine and so on.
.30 Helis swing 550mm blades, .50's run 600-620's, 90's use from 690mm to 720mm depending on model, and then you get into the gassers and turbines and/or special use stuff that run larger yet blades.

Ah ha! That's the piece I was missing! Thanks!

some manf. rate their electrics by motor size.

Ok, and how is the motor size determined? I'm still a bit at a loss where the "450" in TRex 450 comes from, given the 315-335mm blades, and 430 (alphabet soup) motor.

Has anyone ever done up a chart comparing the relative sizes of the current line of helis?

Maybe the 'brushed' equivalent, at least it makes sense..

Here is a pic of a Mini Titan (same size as Trex 450) next to a 50 and 30 size heli.

Ok, while on the subject...

How do those compare to the size of the TRex 600? How about the rumored 500? I've seen a 600 before, and estimated at about twice the size of the 450 (maths aside).

I expected a bigger difference between 30 and 50, so that helps. A lot.

Part of me is lusting after a 600, but fearing the battery price, and am wondering how a "500" would fit into this whole picture, whatever "500" meas. 1/3 of the way between a 450 and 600?

Thanks again,
John

The Trex600 is the same size as the 50 nitro in the middle of the pic above.

The 30 and 50 Raptors are very similar. They share the same frame, rotor head, tailbox, servo tray, etc. There are only a few differences such as gearing, motor mount, clutch and the 50 has a longer boom to accept 600mm blades. The 30 runs 550mm blades.

Here is a great pic from Finless's gallery showing some of the other sizes. The 2nd from the left is a lepton which should be similar in size to the upcoming 500.
