View Full Version : Servo Tape Failure!

I had just changed over to the sym blades this morning and decided to take it out for a spin. About 2 seconds into a low hover the CP shot straight up into the air like a rocket about 25ft and suddenly turned into nose in. My days of practicing nose in would finally pay off.

While in a panic, I dropped the throttle about to 50% and rapidly descended (still in normal mode). I noticed that the cyclic was a little mushy and was not as responsive. At about 1 ft off the ground I gave a little power to ease the landing. The damn thing went nose in hard luckily it was saved by the training gear. It scared the $%!^ out me.

After powering down, I went to check WTF had happened. It turns out the most forward of the servos (elevator control) had come off. The servo tape had become loose for some reason and popped off during flight.

I figured this would be an easy repair, NOT!
Before I applied some new servo tape and re-attached the fallen servo. I decided to check to see if all servos were still working. When I plugged in the Lipo to check it started to glitch like crazy even the 4-1 light went berserk. It turns out one of the servos has failed and won't move an inch. I tried using other ports on the receiver but it still doesn't work. I have even taken apart the servo thanks to the Finless video on "Servo Repair" and put it back together and it still won't work.

It could also be the 4in1. I noticed the unit gets really hot when checking for servo movement with the motors unplugged. I dunno just when things get better some other $%!^ has to happen. :arggg:

Anyway, what other servos can I use besides the original?
Thanks!

any s75 servo... im using the s75's that came with my dx6, hs 65mg's would work.. btw 65mgs would prolly be the best route. seeing as themetal gears will be hard to strip out.. also put zip ties around your sevros. to keep them snug to the servo tape and frame..also cuts down on the servo movment when inputs are givin.. the hs65mgs's are around 35ish a pop...

Just get another S75 servo, they are cheap and get the job done, 3 HS65 MG will weigh down the heli and cost about $80-90 for 3.

i didnt think they would weigh it down to much.

its overkill for a CP, great on a t-rex or other mini, but overkill on a micro. IMO of course.

would the hs65hb's be over kill ?

this is just my way of thinking about rc in general. even if it is over kill for certain things id rather have overkill then something i just broke... when my spektrum servos go out i plan on using 65mg's. if its to much weight i will put a park 400 in.. the more weight would make it alittle more stable..

Problem fixed! I bought another Eflite S75 servo at the LHS it was 18$. I put everything back together and put some zip ties around the servos. Thanks txflyer! I hope they don't move out of place anymore.

I went for a short flight to make sure everything was working and so far no problems. When the morning comes around I need to do some trim adjustments. Switching to the sym blades has increased the head speed a little and now it wants to turn left.

Note to self: make sure your servos are secured or you will regret it.

BTW does flying in the wind with sym blades make a difference? Is it more stable? I only decided to switch to sym blades in the first place so I could fly in some light winds. Flying with flat bottoms makes the heli pop up. I am hoping the syms will solve this, maybe.

sym blades creat less lift. flat bottem blades have more lift.

when the wind hits a rc heli tis like adding throttle. the heli will climb and blow so what in the direction of the wind. to counter you reduce throttle a few clicks but when the wind dies down the heli will start to fall and you need to add more throttle. i spent 12 bucks today and a mixec ontainer of 700 zip ties. i search for zip ties liek a crack head searchs for crack.. also if your mainly just hovering right above the ground you gotta watch adjusting for the wind. ive had afew tip overs cuz i didnt correct for the wind correctly and the heli droped to the ground and the skids got hung in grass as it went to climb out.

Should I stay with flats for now while hovering?

why would you do that. just switch to the syms. i used flat bottem blades for awhile but after about 3 flights i was used to the syms. havent looked back. i feel that the heli is more responsive with the sym blades..if flat bottem creat more lif tthen sym blades. i would think it would help with handling the wind.

Alright, I have to get used to all over again. I have recently moved the links on the servo arms 2 holes in. I think this will help out a little.

Thanks for the tip

Good luck on your Trex450SA.

I'm saving up for a 450SE myself. Its going to be awhile but I can' wait!

thanks man.. you should get a good radio.. you can get a dx6 for around 140 shipped used in good condition. i would stay with spektrum tho.. no glitching or some one switching to your channel. makes flying less stressful. before my dx6 it was always in the back of my mind that at any second it could go crazy from a glitch or something

The Symetrical wings are a faster wing but not as stable at least on aircraft.

Flying with syms isn't too bad. Its a bit twitchy but i'll get used to it. The best part was I got to fly in the wind.

The DX6 is great but I want something I can use on other bigger helis later in the future. I was thinking about the Futuba 7CHP maybe or something else. I would love to get the DX7 but I'm on a budget.
