I've been reading nothing but bad things about the motor that comes with the kit. Is it available MINUS the motor? I have access to Scorpion motors as a friend is a local vendor. I'm most pleased with the Scorpion motors that I have. I'd like to try one on this bird.

It always comes with a motor. I just got a basic heli-motor kit and binned the motor.

I'd really hate to have to pay for something I'm going to throw away. I'd rather be able to buy it with no power system. Maybe I can find a used one.

It looks like there could be a no motor option soon. Not from Gaui but maybe from an online vendor. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one. If it becomes reality I'll post the vendor name as soon as it happens. You will all recognize and trust their name 10,000%.

I'm thinking this motor may be a possible option: http://www.bmkdesigns.net/Scorpion-3026-10-980kv-1000-Watt-Brushless-Motor-pr-201.html
What do you guys think? The owner of BMK Designs is a friend and fellow local flyer. I have a Scorpion motor and a Scorpion ESC in airplanes and I'm VERY happy with them. If they have something that will work in the Hurricane then I'd prefer to fly Scorpion motors. Just look at the prices! The quality is quite obvious and will blow you away when you hold one in your hand.

We know 100 watts per pound is the accepted good flight performance figure for electric airplanes. Is there an accepted similar rating for electric helicopters? I'm guessing around 500 watts per pound. Am I close?

That motor will be about the same as the stock motor. You need a 1500W system to really make this bird zing.

I'm not looking for 3D performance. Just reliable all around "good" performance with acceptable flight time. I'd be willing to bet that 90-95% of the people that build planes and heli's for 3D are like me and couldn't fly 3D if their life depended on it.

OK how about THIS motor: http://www.bmkdesigns.net/Scorpion-3032-8-988kv-1200-Watt-Brushless-Motor-pr-225.html
1500 watts is out of the question for me. It's more power than I could ever need and it's going to be way too hard on batteries.

Mike is small time and can't afford freebies but he does give club members killer deals. I've been meaning to ask him if the motor can handle 6S voltage. I'll e-mail him now but he works late shift so I don't expect to hear back very soon.
If it can handle the extra voltage then this is the motor I'll get when I step up. I have a Scorpion ESC and a Scorpion 200 watt motor. I'm more than happy with both of them. In fact I plan to buy two more motors for a twin that crashed because of low priced crap motors giving uneven thrust. Be sure to take a VERY close look at Scorpion products! You'll be surprised.

Word from Lucien at Scorpion motors is that the motor CAN handle 6S. Not all of us are concerned with hard 3D so this may be a viable option for us. Just a bit more power may be just the ticket. After I try the stock motor out for the first few flights I'll probably get the Scorpion from BMKDesigns.net. The price is right and Mike is a great guy to deal with.

Ben,

It'll be quite some time before I change motors. I'm still waiting for Ready Heli to get their shipment in stock so I can do some parts ordering. Then I'll be able to do a maiden flight. After that I'm sure it'll be more than a few weeks before I make any motor changes. I want to get used to it in "stock" configuration first.
