By "big heli" I mean something I can't safely fly indoors.
I bought a blade CP after they were released and taught myself how to fly it indoors (in my dorm room; you learn quick that way) last winter, and outdoors over the summer. Now that I'm out of the dorms and my apartment I have the room to really get into the hobby.
I've been looking at used heli's for the time being (being a college student isn't fun). It's not so much the money over time as it is the initial investment.
I found this over on RCU http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=293890
is it a decent deal or should I just wait till the end of the summer and buy something new?
any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
-Tim
Also,I would really like to stay away from electric. Not a fan of having to wait for a pack to charge.

Sounds a bit high for that old of a heli. I know he says that it has not been flown much but it is an older model. I would look around for a Raptor V2 or similar in a 50 size if possible. It will take you farther. Also the OS 32 is enough motor for a 30 size but the 37 is much better.
I sold this one a while back. Just for an example. It had never seen fuel in the tank and it went for $600.

Keep looking. You will find the right deal.

Ya, the radio is decent but the heli and gyro are nothing special for that price. I'd also suggest a 50 v2.

Alright, well thanks for all the input. Thats exactly what I was looking for.
I think I'm going to pick up a raptor 50 kit this week. Build it and just add radio equipment as I get the money.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Keep an eye on the classifieds. You can find some good deals on the electronics and save some money. If you need any more advice just ask on the 'Freak and you will get a "real" answer.

You want bigger or really big?
A Trex 450 sized is a step up in performance and ease of flying. A 50 nitro is a bigger step up, plus requires more space (too big to be a park flyer) as well as support equipment.

I first looked into the T-Rex, however since I live in downtown Cincinnati; parkflying is out of the question.
Since I have to drive out of the city to fly anyways, I figure I might as well go to an established field.
I also have most of the support equipment from past experiences with planks (field box, starter, fuel pump, etc).

If you want to go nitro, Raptor or Trex 600N seem to be the way to go. Both are well supported with parts availability, online help, and lcoal flyers. But what most of the local people are flying is important so you can get local help.
Personally I am waiting for the Trex 600N Standard version to come out.

Well, I kept looking for something used online and finally gave up.
Plus, I'd like the knowledge associated with being able to build and setup my own heli.
So yesterday I finally broke down and ordered a Raptor 50 Titan with a TT 50 Pro engine.
Now all I need is a gyro and radio...and a sim.

Sounds like a deal to me. You might want to reconsider the TT50 though. The OS 50 Hyper is a much better engine. The TT engines seem to be hit or miss.

Well thats good to know...
I'm really not too concerned with it at this point (it was a package deal at a decent price) if I decide to get into something where I feel the TT isn't working well enough I'll shelf it and slap in a new engine.

They always seem to need a lot of tinkering and have no where near the power of an OS.

I am glad that I am not the only one that heard that.

Gotta love the money spending in this hobby! I bought a cheap, Ha-ha, Heli radio combo with ccpm as an intro for $200. Then parts. Then more parts and the REALFLIGHT G3.5 Sim, then a computer radio. Then....
I love the sim for learning. I have a problem when the helis fly off in the distance as to orientation, but they're still great. Thanks for the thread too, cause I'll be looking for a bigger heli too to go with this fancy radio I bought cause I needed a new micro receiver for a park flyer plane I'm building. Seemed to be the right thinking at the time.
Happy Flying!!!!!
