I thought I would try something new.... The idea came to me after doing the interview with insideheli podcast folks. This is quick audio help/tutorials that I want to call Helifreak Radio. I can do these much quicker than videos (dont worry I will still do videos) and the idea is for smaller discussions and items.

Let me know if you like this idea and feel free to post ideas for next episodes.

First Episode: 4.8 / 6V systems and servos / regulators.
HF Radio -> 6V systems and how it works with servos (5 Megs) (http://video.helifreak.com/?subpath=finless/hf_radio&filename=1_regulators.mp3)

Hi,

I like it :D Didn't miss video at all on this subject
It's depending on the subject ofcourse. Some things can't be explained without vid. But a combination could be possible.(Refer to to pictures and/or diagrams posted in the forum)

It's a good idea, i don't mind listening instead of watching for a change.

Love the idea, more Bob the better :D When you mention the step down for tail servos i assume you mean a 0.71 not a 7.1 . 0.71 happens to be the typical voltage threshold of a NP junction diode.

I like it. :noteworthy

No I mean a 7.1 volt blocking diode not a 7.1 volt drop. A 7.1 volt blocking diode will bring 5.8 to about 5.2.

Great idea Bob! Only one suggestion -- why not just do a podcast? That way I can subscribe to new releases using any RSS-aware application (there are many!) You could actually do a video podcast as well in which case people could subscribe in their favorite tool and get both (audio/video) automatically when you upload them...

A "Podcast" is just a glitzy name (not sure where it came from) that just means "syndicated content" (i.e. content that you can subscribe to like a magazine or newspaper). The "content" can be whatever you want -- text, audio, video, etc. You've probably heard the term "RSS" as well. RSS is an acronym that stands for "Real Simple Syndication" and is simply the underlying XML-based communications protocol that makes all of this stuff work. Nowadays the underlying plumbing that makes all of this work is supported "out-of-the-box" in most popular hosting applications (forum software, etc.) as well as the client applications that people use to subscribe to your content. For example the latest Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers allow you to subscribe to syndicated content as well as the latest version of Microsoft Outlook. There are many others. The advantage to all of this is once someone is subscribed to your "feed", when you upload something new the content is delivered automatically to anybody that is subscribed.

For example, the InsideHeli guys are simply recording their audio just like you are but the only extra thing they're doing is exposing an RSS feed so people can automatically get the new shows. I've subscribed to their feed in iTunes (another application that knows about RSS/podcasts) so now everytime I launch iTunes and there is a new InsideHeli show it's "just there". By the way, great episode with those guys -- I'd say it's their best so far!

I'm not sure what forum software DebianDog is using to host HeliFreak, but it wouldn't surprise me if it already supports RSS feeds. In which case, it would be exceptionally easy for you to turn this functionality on.

A little bit more on the terminology (I know it can get confusing!):

- "RSS Feed" implies text-only syndicated content (although not always!)
- "Podcast" implies audio-only syndicated content.
- "Video Podcast" implies video-only syndicated content.

In any case, the same RSS protocol is being used underneath the covers (remember, the RSS protocol is "content agnostic").

I did a quick search on the forum posts for "RSS" out of curiousity and came up with the following nugget:

http://www.helifreak.com/viewtopic.php?t=35821&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=rss

Using this technique you can get an RSS feed to all posts to a particular forum. For this forum (forum 95) the RSS feed is:

http://www.helifreak.com/rss.php?f=95

It's a bit sub-optimal, however, in that you also get all forum replies so there's a lot of noise. If you're trying to syndicate content of a particular type (in this case audio) it really doesn't work too well. I wonder if the forum software has any other RSS switches you can control...

Bob I would really like it if you made a podcast. That way I could easily keep up with your content.

Thanks,

Jeremy

I like it. What ideas do you have for future episodes?

Personally I would like to see something that explains some of these bigger electric motors and how some of the popular manufacturers (Neu/Z-Power/Etc) classify them. Its probably something easy, but for someone that hasn't read up on them, all those model numbers don't mean anything to me... yet

I am taking requests for more radio.....

Funky as for the classifications of motors... DANG MAN if I could figure that out myself I would do it! I dont believe therer is a standard to even talk about let alone what manufacturers use in an attempt to describe them.

Hmmm I wonder if I can get an unterview with Steve Neu to explain HIS motor nominclature...

i dont know if someone has the server space and a server that has RSS capability and not the least has the time and brain to make the podcast, but i have found the guide to iTunes podcasting

I'd prefer to use www.podcastpickle.com for uploading the 'casts anyway.
faster, easier, and apple-free.
I bet I could get an interview with Henry Caldwell and Marcus Kim.
A question suggestion area would likely be a help to us to ask the questions that folks want answered.

Hi,

I just actually listened to the podcast interview with Bob on insideheli.
Great interview with Bob !!! Nice to hear some "general talk" about heli's for a change as well.

@Wayne
Would like to hear an interview with Henry. Only thing i know about him is that he can fly like crazy. But would like to know how he started out flying heli's and so on. Just the usual questions to start with.
One extra question: Does he have plans on becoming an official narrator on fly events.....
This must sound familiar to you Wayne ..."That things got so much power its gonna suck the clouds down")
I still get tears in my eyes watching that movie :D
