I want to give a big thanks to the Central Ohio Rotary Flyers for inviting me to check out the club . I was invited to come fly today by the club president Shannon (sdlloyd here on Helifreak). I had a really great time. I met some other helifreaks, saw lots of gorgeous helis (including the new 600N  ) and saw plenty of great flights. Everyone I met today was very nice and made me feel welcome from the time I arrived. I had some problems starting my 50 but a couple guys stopped what they were doing to get me fixed up right away. They had me up and running in no time. Its a great example of the kind of people you meet in this hobby. The field is great with plenty of room to fly mutliple helis. Its a big change for me after flying in parking lots for the last year. I will definately be joing the club shortly.
If you are in the central Ohio area check out the club at www.corflyers.com.
Thanks again to everyone I met today, especially Shannon for inviting me and letting me get in some flights even though I am not a member yet

This looks like it might be the perfect group for me to check out, thanks for posting about them!
I live in Columbus, OH and so far I'm just trying to find all the information possible about r/c helis before I actually go out and buy anything.
You can just go to the [/backstory] if you want to save some time.
I first got interested in r/c helis because one of my friend's dad had a 5-6 heli fleet when I was growing up, their entire basement was set up as a heli workshop. It was always lots of fun to go out and watch him fly around with them. He didn't do any of the crazy 3D stuff I've seen videos of, but this was also a good 15yrs ago. Then the guy got divorced, my friend's mother kept the house and I never saw the helis again :(
Skip to this year, I saw a lot of r/c helis on sale while christmas shopping, and I thought about buying one just to play around with. But, having done r/c cars and boats I knew there was a vast difference between a cheap department store toy and a truly enjoyable and rewarding model, so I decided to do some research first.
I read some sites and FAQs, seems the Blade CX2 is a decent, stable learn to hover heli. But why go with a coaxial when I could get a CP like the Esky king 2 for less (aside from the obvious issue of me crashing it, which I assume will happen with any heli)? Well, because the esky smacks of toy quality (no offense to anyone who has one, for the price I'm still very tempted). One of the other things I read was that a bigger heli will tend to be a bit more forgiving when it comes to things like wind, which led me to nitro helis (after having both electric and nitro cars I'm quite partial to nitro).
I'm tired of writing, and you're no doubt tired of reading my ramblings so I'll cut to the chase. I've come to the conclusion a .50 size nitro is probably the best way to go, to give me a nice platform to learn with (after some sim time of course) and a nice upgrade path for the future.
Before I go and spend a bunch of money on a heli, radio, electronics, field gear, and replacement parts though, I'd like to see some in action, and I'd like to know what brands/models other Ohio people are flying.

Any time you want to come up you are welcome. Obviously the weather has us all grounded right now... at least mostly grounded. I hear that a few still get out and fly when it is somewhat warm. once the weather breaks we will be hitting it again.
we have a great bunch of guys up here who fly all the different makes and brands. so chances are someone has it, has had it, or still flys it. So I am sure we can answer your questions and or help.
As far as helis go, spend what you can afford. I have a raptor 50 Titan and love it. Wish I would have gotten it before I got my 30. It is a lot more stable and easier to fly. And like all other sicknesses/addictions(ask your buddies dad), they become an obsession and you have to have more. then you can get into the smaller TREX's and mini Titans...etc.
check the CORF website for activity and upcoming flying. Hope to see you out there.
