Howdy everyone...
I just bought a Fury Extreme from a classified on RR, it's an 8.45 model, no blades included.
I've got 3 JR 8311's for the swash, a 9253 for throttle, and either a 401 or a CSM 560 micro with a 9254 on tail for now (will go up to a 601 when they're available again) I've got a brand-new YS91 waiting to go in.
I'm wondering about blades... I think I want to go with either MAH or SAB 710's, anyone flown both that can describe the differences?
Also, any recommendations for tail blades?
One other thing... I've got a MPII 90 size, but I'm wondering if a Hatori SB16FH would be the better choice here?
I'm pretty pumped about this... I haven't owned an X-Cell since way back in the days of the bent-frame 60's.
Thanks for any advice.

Far as I know some of the shops that advertise here in Helifreak have the GY 601. RIck's did have some in stock before the holidays. I would go with the GY 401/9254 right now.
My preference would be the Hatori muffler with the YS motor. The YS seems to prefer the Hatori.
Tail blades can be up to 106 mm. MS Composites, SAB, V Blades, all those are good tail blades and work fine.
I prefer the SAB 710 mm blades.

David,
Do you know what weight your SABs are? I switched to some SABs and really like them for 3D stuff but they don't auto as well as the V-blades.
the collective,
I am running 105 V-blades on the tail and really like them. The SAB 710s are awesome main blades for 3D. I haven't tried the MAHs though.
I am running a Hatori SB-16 with an aftermarket clamp. It's a great setup. If you want a pic of the clamp just let me know.

I did run the 710 SAB's, but currently testing the 710 V's and at the present time I would recommend the SAB I found them to be alot smoother which suits my flying style a bit better than the agressive bite of the V's, dont get me wrong I like the V's but the SAB's suit me better

I'm waiting for Great Planes to get the 601's back in stock, I work at a hobby shop and I can get it for dealer cost that way. In the meantime I'll run the 401/9254.
Anyone flying MAH 710's on their Extreme? I'm almost ready to order the SAB 710's from Cyberheli, but I'd like to hear about MAH as well... I live pretty close to Dmitri so it's pretty easy to run over and grab a set if I decide to go that way.

If you work at a hobby shop and they are an MA dealer. MA carries the SAB's. If you can get them at dealer cost. That makes them even more attractive.

I run the MAH 700 G1. I am not shure-of-thumb enough for the G2, but are definately the next blade. Also, I love the way that they auto. The G2 are quicker and still auto great, but the G1 "floats" a little more. IMHO go with the MAH. It is a great blade and has a new, awesome night blade to match. :D

I run MAH 710's (12/60-48), paddles and tails - tremendous energy... I like :D

An update to this thread...
The Fury arrived early this week, very carefully packaged and in great shape. Only exception being the paint job was nothing to get excited about. This was exactly as described by the seller who goes by the name Rogue123 over on RR.
I installed my YS91 and radio gear, then headed up to East Coast Extreme Helis in New Rochelle (about 20 minutes from where I live) and grabbed a set of SAB 710's, a set of SAB 105 tails, a Hatori SB16FH, and while I was there Dino took a look at the ship to make sure I didn't get anything too wacky (my last X-Cell was a bent frame 60 back in 1990)
The weather managed to settle down a bit on Thursday so I took him out for some break-in... The YS fired right up, and even running rich as heck had a ton of power... I didn't do anything other than hover around, a few gentle circuits, and some autos that day... I don't want to throw it around until I'm sure the YS will behave, but my initial impressions are very good. The machine is VERY responsive, and autos were very nice... TONS of energy left at the end compared to my EVO and Freya.
Thanks to Rogue123 for the deal, and thanks to Dino at East Coast for the help...
Now if I can make it to a few of the Invasions, 2005 is looking to be a GREAT year...

Congratulations on the Extreme. You will like the way the SAB blades perform.
The SAB 710 mm main blades are great on the Extreme. Also the 106 mm tail blades work great also. Yes they are 106mm even thou they are called 105 mm <G>.

Yes they are 106mm even thou they are called 105 mm <G>.
but... but... that's FALSE ADVERTISING!!!
Seriously... I'm so happy with this machine I can't really find the words to adequately express how I'm feeling...
A couple of extra Q's come to mind about now...
1. I notice there's a bit of backlash in the tail gearbox... everything is free and almsot zero backlash up front by the main gear, but in the tailbox itself it seems like I can turn the output shaft and blades about 5 to 10 degrees each way... is that excessive free play in the tail gears? IF so, would I want to go in there and shim the gears closer?
2. How much of an issue would it be to retrofit the open tailbox to this ship? I wouldn't want to get into a big overhaul to do it... is it a relatively easy upgrade?
Thanks again,
David

The open gearbox is a very easy upgrade. Keep in mind if you do purchase the open tail gearbox you will have to buy a new push rod with ends. The reason being that with the open gearbox it lengthens the pushrod run. So just buy a new one.
That being said the ONLY reason I upgraded mine is because I didn't like not seeing the gears and I didn't like pumping grease into it and cleaning up the mess.
The closed gearbox works fine as long as you get the proper mesh. The backlash you may be noticing could be coming from the dogbone ends on the tailrotor shaft. Where they mate into the delrin/plastic is maybe where this is coming from.
If you did a careful job of setting tailrotor gear mesh then I wouldn't worry about it.
I do like the open gearbox. It looks cool and it sounds good too.

All that is involved in changing to the open gear box.
Jeff mentioned, you will need a new pushrod and build it approx 10-12 mm longer.
You will have to pull the boom off the model and turn it around. Put the end that is towards the gear box now up in the boom clamps on the frames. Notched end up front. Then you will need to drill a 3mm hole on each side of the carbon boom.
That is about all it takes to install the new gear box.

I hadn't even considered that the backlash could be coming from the dogbone joints... I guess I'd be wise to pop the gearbox off and check it to be sure.
Thanks yet again.

I will be purchasing a Fury Extreme this summer once school is out and I am able to cut some fire wood for money. It sounds like you are really happy with yours. This will be my first 90 size. I love the Audacity Models Tiger 50 and the Fury should compliment it nicely.
