View Full Version : How do you wire up this beast?

Hi Folks,
This is my first electric and I'm a bit confused as to how to wire things up. Please help me with the following questions:
1. My Berg 5 has an input for a battery. However, I'm pretty sure this doesn't connect directly to the main battery pack. The ESC has an output that would go into this connector on the BERG but I'm pretty sure this ESC connector needs to go to the THROTTLE channel on the BERG. So my question is ..... where do I connect the BATT input on my BERG receiver to?
2. It looks as though the battery (both terminals) connect directly to the ESC....correct?
3. Do you people use a switch between the main battery pack and the ESC?
4. The brushless motor has three wires (none of them are marked). Does it matter which wire connects to which ESC output?
Thanks in advance for your help.

1. The esc plugs into the throttle channel, you wont use the battery input.
2. Yes, put a female deans connector on the battery and a male on the esc.
3. I don't
4. Doesn't matter, switching thw wire will change the motor direction though.

Thanks. Another question for you:
1. My servo output connector has three wires: BROWN, RED, ORANGE which one is the signal line?
2. Another of my servos has YELLOW, RED, BLACK which is the signal line?
Thanks.

yellow and orange are the signal wires.

I have a question to add:
HeliHobby finally got my replacement receiver shipped to me. (LONG STORY!!!) I now have a Berg 5 RX...I thought a 6 channel was needed???
If the plugs normally go in this order: throttle, aileron, elevator, rudder, gyro gain, collective...
...then how do you account for the gyro gain and collective in the programmable 5/6 slot and battery slot?
Thanks, Jeanette

If you are using a GYRO like the 401 and want to use the remote gain then yes you will need the 6th chanel. If not then no. I use a 240 and it works just fine for me right now.

Well, there goes another mistake I made. I upgraded the gyro from the 240 to the 401 and didn't even think about the difference of needing the extra slot between the two gyros. Easy fix...get a Berg 6, put the Berg 5 in my Tensor! :)
My current setup is an Eflite 4200kV, 9T, CC25, HS-50/55, TP 1320...this pack is small and I'm not getting very long flights ofcourse. I bought a CF battery extender and I would like to know what size you guys think I can go up to. :?:
That setup ran really HOT, but I need to state that I put really heavy training gear on it b/c I wasn't sure how squirely it would be initially. (I had the home made training gear on that I used on my R30.) I haven't flown it since I've taken off the training gear because of all this RX swapping with HeliHobby. What a nightmare it has been!

You can use a 401 without remote gain control. I forgot what you have to do, but I know it can be done. Have not had a 401 in ove a year, so the old fart brain dumped the info.

Whirly-Girl:
That's not really the optimum motor/battery combo. The T-Rex seems to fly best with a high torque/low RPM motor with a larger pinion gear. The Align 400 motors ("S" or "L") with a 13 or 15T pinion respectively seem to be working out the best.
The ThunderPower 2100 seems to be the battery of choice, too. Also, it helps to run the mesh on the pinion/main gears a little on the loose side. Doing that helps keeps the temps lower. Also, if you use the Align motor, the heat sink only costs $3.50 and makes a difference.

Okay, I know the kV stands for the rpm per volt...so, how do I find the torque information for these motors?

I don't know if there are acutal measurements available. But the lower the KV, the higher the torque. IOW: A 2800kv motor has more torque than a 4200kv.

Along with making sure you have some gear clearance, you need to run the belt pretty loose on these to get the best flight times. If the belt is broken in - you should almost be able the squeeze it together at the front.
The TP 2100 will give better flight time at the expense of weight. Your 1320s must be working really hard with a 4200 Kv motor.
Align is coming out with a 2800 Kv "L" series motor. It should have more torque and it is supposed to have built in air cooling.
I have been running a new AON motor on the 2100 packs and I like it. I also have a Neumotor that I run on 4s. This setup has 2900 hs, leaps off the ground really fast, has 0 bog, and flies for about 8 min. The problem is that you need to run a seperate BEC to power the radio. The CC ESCs can't handle 4 servos and a gyro on 4s.
When you can get your hands on some of the new carbon blades from Align and a stretch kit, you will see a big increase in efficeincy.

Hmmm...it sounds like there are just so many options to look at. I'm thinking about buying a second motor and atleast changing that part of my setup. It's easy enough to swap the motors out atleast. Jeffro - you mentioned some things about when the belt is broken in...how long does that take and can I help it along?
Sorry about sidetracking off the topic of "wiring up the beast".
Maybe I should create a new topic, "Help the clueless girl with electrics!"
Thanks again guys. This site rocks.

Don't sweat it. We're all bothers (and sisters!).

I consider the belt broken in after a couple of flights. If you start off too loose with a new belt, it may slip after a couple of minutes.

When will you be at the field again Jeff? I would LOVE to try your HOT machine out. Jeff is an electric JUNKIE incase youguys have nor already noticed. :D

Baja,
The soonest will be next Wednesday. I am in Denver at a training session this weekend. I should have both my T-Rexes with me. I have a stretch version with the new Align Carbon blades running the AON motor on 3s and a light weight CCPM conversion running the Neumotor on 4s.
The light heli should come in under 600g. :glasses:

Sounds cool. I will be there weather permitting Jeff!! I'll bring the Video Camera so I can share the rocket ship with you FREAKS!!
Don't worry about missing this Sat Jeff, we have a big ice storm moving in and Bob Caldwell (Our weather guy) says we are going to get "pounded". Enjoy your trip, seeya Wednesday!!
