All this Hurricane 550 talk is making it real hard for me to wait on an Trex 500 heli. Iam sooo tempted to order a hurricane 550.

It's time to give in to temptation. You'll be very happy with what you get for the price. With just a few mods it looks to be THE 500 size bird to have. I'm just waiting for Ready Heli to get their parts order in stock so I can get some goodies. Then I'll finish mine up. I have ZERO regrets with my purchase even knowing about the gear weakness. (Just look at how crappy the T-Rex 450 gears are. ) That doesn't bother me a bit. I love to modify and upgrade so this is a plus for me!

THis heli is so cheap that you almost cant NOT get one.... You dont need to upgrade to metal head EXCEPT the blade grips if you are going to run a bigger motor....
So to get hot performance:
Better motor and ESC
Metal blade grips (my opinion anyway)
and Adrian's gear
AND YOU GOOD TO GO! Other than the mods I show in my build videos but those are cheap and easily done.

I am working on a 6S 3300-3700mah battery mount for the Hurricane. It will involve some frame mods like cutting off the current battery mount and some of the frame above the top servo. The battery mount will become part of the frame so you will regain the strength and servo stability lost from trimming the frame.
The battery will go back all the way to the motor to reduce the impact of the weight increase on CG.
The first version will be aluminum with a fancy carbon version later if there is demand for it.
Trust me it will look cool and work great!
I will have some pics late next week.

Adrian, what is the differnce in size between one 6s pack and two 3s packs stacked on top of each other. I would still like to use two 3s packs in series for a couple of reasons. One I only have CellPro chargers that are good for 4s and two I have other toys that will run great on 3s. I am hoping the only differnce in size is the height of the packs. If that is the case then the battery mount that you are designing now will work both with one 6s pack OR two 3s packs in series.

Ok I found some Poly RC cell information online
A 3s 3700mah pack is 146mmX52mmX24mm
A 6s 3700mah pack is 146mmX46MMX45mm
So if I stack two of the 3s packs up they will be 3mm or so higher than the 6s pack. If and when you design the battery mount please leave a few extra mm or so of space so we can run two 3s packs OR one 6s pack. THat would be great!

Raydee - Those numbers look weird...like each pack uses a diffrent type of cell.
A 3s pack should be the same length and width as a 6S just not as tall.
I am sizing the battery mount to fit the following cells:
Kokam 3200 134x42x44mm
Flight Power 3300 150x46x38mm
Flight Power 3700 150x46x42mm
Thunder Power 3850 148x44x45mm
The battery mount will accept anything from 2 - 3S to a 6S pack.

Great, as long as I can fit two 3s packs that would be awesome.
Yeah when I looked at the numbers I thought they were weird too, I figured they would just double the height but I guess not with these cells.

What is the max headspeed that this heli will safely handle? With the metal grips of course?

Good question!
I have been over 2400 yet myself but with the new gears and fix the tail (it can lockup or stick at higher head speeds) then you can go higher.
I am guessing the hard 3D guys will want 2500 or there abouts. Above that who knows until someone tried it! But going higher may not really be neccessary.

Bob:
FYI, official rh headspeed clocked in at 2490-2520 during spoolup tests yesterday. We went to the longer boom (didnt like it too much) and landed to dial in the tail...thats when rain came down, again. cracked the damn grip, so awaiting fresh parts.

I figured the head speed was around there! I had guessed 2600 but 2520 is close enough :)
I assume this was with the new Gaui motor and what pinion? 24T?

Thanks for your opinion ,Bob. I don't want to see a 500mm carbon flying toward me at about a thousand mph!!! I am shooting for the 2200-2300 area with my 600L motor. I am limiting the throttle to about 80%. Looks good on paper anyway.

22t. and u guessed 2800 i think.
OK opinions from the peanut gallery...
HOLY CRAP.... for sure that was not the stock tail at those head RPMs.... I bet you used my Raptor tail mod or some other tail for sure!
Head speed HAD to be near 2800 as just my guess?
its all good...now you and i and the community need to dial in this tail...i sanded down some thin washers with a dremel...i cant wait to test them with the Boca thrust bearings with Chris.

I am looking at the Hurricane 550 XES PRO SE Helicopter Combo from readyheli for $459.95
http://www.readyheli.com/204002_Hurricane_550_XES_PRO_SE_Helicopter_Combo_p/204002.htm
Wondering if the stock motor and esc will be ok for general flying, since the motor and esc don't come with it ? Thinking of getting a dx7 and ar7000 receiver for it.
Any thoughts ?
I wanted to start out using my FP pack from my trex 450.
Been helping a friend build a hdx 500 heli and its giving me the itch to get a bigger heli. :?
Thanks

Tom, Bob has stated in a few threads that the stock gear is just fine for the average flyer. I too am waiting for the SE to be in stock at ReadyHeli....I am hoping they don't sell out in one afternoon ;)

I was not sure if the stock motor would still work ok with the metal head. I am assuming all the metal upgrade that the SE comes with would add some weight to it ?
Tom

Its not much weight at all. The stock motor would be fine for sport flying. It give longer flight time too. Its just the the metal parts are not necessary with the stock motor.

Thanks AdrianM.
Are they pretty much just as tough in a minor crash as the metal ones ? Only reason I though about getting the more expensive one with metal is for durability. Also, do you know if the digital servos that come with a Dx7 radio will fix in the Hurricane ?
Thanks
Tom

For durability you can get just the rotor head top block and blade grips. Nothing else really breaks in the head during a crash.
The 3D guys like the alloy parts because they are stiffer and more responsive.
The DX7 Servos fit fine. Thats what Finless is using.

Hi
i just ordered the new revco gears and a 19tooth pinion from readyheli.
my question is, will this give me the same HS.
iam running a z20 980kv with stock gear and 16tooth pinion today.
hope i made myself clear.

980 kv motor with a 19t pinion will yield approximately 1893 @ 100% efficiency...realistic 95% efficiency will yield a mere 1799.
I do not think you will have enough headspeed for any meaningful flight...check temps when you try it and keep an eye on your motor can.
a 21t is better suited for mild/sport flying, and brings you into the 2000-2100 hs range.
