A123 have some preliminary information about their new generation of cells targeted at the Hybrid Electric Vehicle market.

32 Series Automotive Class Lithium Ion™ Cells: A123Systems recognizes that the impending transportation revolution requires industry-specific solutions. To that end, we have developed two Automotive Class Lithium Ion cells, the ultra high power AHR32113M1Ultra and the more energy dense AHR32157M1HD.

These two cells, designed for HEV and PHEV applications offer extremely low cost per Watt and Watt-hour, respectively.

The AHR32113 uses the new Ultra electrode design, offering yet higher power over that seen in the traditional 26650M1.

Alternatively, the 32157 uses a more energy dense electrode, geared for the higher energy requirements of the PHEV marketplace, while not sacrificing the power capability needed for charge-sustaining operation.


No technical specifications but some hints, including test results showing performance up to 300,000 cycles (yes, that's not a typo, three hundred thousand)!

Our application is a deep-discharge one so it looks like the 32157 might be good for us.

Some wild guessing
The M1 cell is officially the 26650. It is 26mm diameter and 65mm long, 2300mAh and 70g. If the part numbers are encoding the dimensions, then based on their part numbers, maybe these new cells are 32mm diameter, and 110/150mm long respectively ? If so, and if similar mechanical and energy density, then they should be around 6000mAh/180g and 8000mAh/245g. That is pretty big and heavy. If their useful performance is 16c/33c/50c like the M1 cells then a 4s/1kg pack of the 32157 would deliver 128/264/400A = 1.5/2.8/4kW

The large size will make high-cell count packs a problem. Low cell count packs mean huge currents, another big problem. So maybe they won't be much use to us ? Maybe only in the largest helis with under-belly battery trays and used for AP where high stability but only low to moderate power is needed ?

Might be they end up no use at all for R/C, but it is still great to see the technology advancing, there are bound to be more spin offs in time.

Only nominal volts will tell would be nice if each cell was 4000 mah and 6.6 volts in the 32mm wide 110 long case =)
