That's a great looking canopy Jason,

A couple of questions,

Was that sprayed through an airbrush or just a regular old spray paint can? What brand paint did you use?

What technique do you use to mask off the design on the front?

Finally, looks like you finished off with a clear coat. I've read a lot on here about guys using automotive 2 part/step clear....where do you purchase that at? Is it something you can get at AutoZone or do you have to go to a specialty auto paint store?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Matt

Did you just use blue painters tape for a mask and then razor out the design?

I hope this will help I started off with dawn dish soap and a scotch pad(green)knocks the shine off and any grease on the canopy and your hands. Then I dried with lint free rag then used tack cloth to get any dust or trash off.The pink is a spray can from lowes and the other supplys are from car quest.I used an air brush kit with the blue and the clear paints .I did the design outline with 1/8in fine line tape overlaped with 1/4in then 3in. tape. 1st ,light coat of base color let dry 5 to 10 mins you should still see some of the white 2nd,another coat a little heaver this time let dry 15 to 20 min until dry to the touch,3rd wash again with scotch pad gently to smooth any trash in base coat,4th washed, dried, tacked last coat of base color same as #2 but let dry overnight. The next step wash(scotch pad) dry, tack, and tape off design. You will not need to wash in between coats but you need to scuff with dry scotch pad and clean with slovent(sherwill clean) your taped design in between coats. Then let dry over night next untape wash with soap and scotch pad.And finally the clear .

WOW that is hot.
Definitely get a hi res pic to David at Gohbee and you will have a good chance to make the calendar.

You put the metal flake thru an airbrush?
What airbrush and tip did you use?
Every time I tried to use a metal flake in my Pasha airbrush even with the biggest #5 tip, it just clogged up.
I had to go and get a cheap full size gun but that wastes more paint than it uses.

Jason,

That helped a lot. Thanks for taking the time to lay out the details.

Hi jeff and Matt,The flake is in the paint.Yes, I have an matco(badger)air brush kit I also bought the two other needles and tip regulators small and large it comes with a medium needle and regulator.I also put flakes in the clear by letting the flakes settle to the bottom of the can after a day.I then took stick :lolol slowly went to the bottom you can feel the layer of flakes dig some out slowly let the paint drip off. Then I take the flake goo put in small glass jar with thiner mix to separate let flakes settle to bottom of jar pour off paint/thinner mix, slowly repeat until you have clear thinner and flakes.I use the flakes in the tinner to mix with the clear. :smokin: here are some pictures enjoy. Jason I cant wait to get her airborn!

There is an auto paint store near me that sells all kinds of flakes that you can mix with any paint you want. I just have a hard time getting the flakes thru my spray guns.
Washing flakes sounds a little flaky to me,

Any Manlove auto store carries the 2 part clear (clear/hardener, and you'll want to get a bottle of thinner). Two notes. Please do the following . Wear gloves when handling , spraying or using product. ALSO wear a respirator when handling, SPRAYING or using it in anyway. Good idea to wear long sleeves too. This stuff WILL kill you. Everyone be safe  On a lighter note nice canopies :smokin: When you getting your bike back together?

Wow - thanks for details on your process!

What I'm trying to figure out is the secret for round lines in the mask. Is the thin tape easy to lay down in circles?? Maybe you need to score the tape on the inside of a curve while you lay it down?

Can someone explain that to me?

Yes, the fine line tape is easy to apply.I use a method of pulling and stretching to get the curves I want.I hold the tape down on the project with one hand and sretch and curve with the other. If you would like I can maybe post some pictures in steps? :smokin: Jason S.

Cool - I'll have to get some tape and try it out.

If you have pictures that would be awesome. A 20 second quick video clip might be even more helpful! ;)

Seriously, thanks for the tips!
