My GY611 gyro came with a shield plate to go in between the double sided tape. However the insert that came with it, says for the GY240, 401, 502, and 601. So should I or shouldn't I use the shield plate?

If you don't mind me piggy-backing on your post....

I purchased a GY601 second hand and it was missing the plate. I've read the plate is there to shield the sensor from RF(?). Sounds very uni-directional by only shielding the bottom of the sensor only.

Could I just make my own plate out of some plain old sheet metal of similar thickness? Aluminum for weight savings?

When is the plate required and when is it not? My installation has the sensor directly over a front transmission tail bearing in an aluminum bearing block. If the bearing is good, there shouldn't be any RF - so do I still need the plate?

Thanks.

I have several units and I let the heli tell me if the shield is neccessary.. All but one of my R90's is without the shield. One had a twitch in the tail I put in the shield and it went away.. All associated bearings are good and were replaced once to test.

My gasser has the sensor up front and really really close to some hard working servos I had to run the shield there.

MY Raptor 50s dont have the shield

My new Trex 600N I mounted the gyro on the back mount similar to where you put a raptor sensor I do not use the shield there.. If I mounted it up in front across the two servos I would have put the shield on without ever checking for it..

The shield is an RF shield it does block out noise I have no idea why on only the bottom but I am assuming that it because that is the most likely place any noise would eminate at the gyro sensor from.

Several of my shields are hand made from some stainless that was laying around a friends garage.. I do not know if aluminum would have the same qualities but it is worth a try for sure.

From what I have learned so dont that plate have nothing to do with RF noice.
Insted it's there to change the frequency for the sensor due to vibrations from the helicopter.
