Hi hurricane owners!

I'm thinking about bying a hurricane,
but the fact that its all plastic makes me wonder if it is really better then my t-rex SE..

off course its more stable, but does it really flies better then a SE?
and how about the used materials, does it quick wear out?

So will I get improvement by getting a hurricane, or should I stay with the rex?

thaks,
oscar :)

Hi,

I am not that sure as Piranha is. I have both; an SE and a H550.
The weight to power ratio of an SE is very good! So I like the performance of the T-Rex. The stock H550 isn't that quick.

If you strart pimping the H550 like hell, moneywise you are in regions of a T-Rex 600 very quick. And that IS the better Heli.

I got my 550 for 300 €,
now you need carbon blades, 50 €
Alu Head and Grips (mandatory with carbons) 120 €
Better ESC 60€, used Align 600 ESC
Better Motor 100 €
Better Motor Plate and Gears 50 €

680 Euros! Ooops, the T-REX 600CF Kit black+600L+75G ESC+3A BEC is only 588 €, so you have 100$ spare to buy blades!

The big difference is the battery pack. On the H550 you go with 2 X 3S1P pack, so you can use your 450 Equipment. Even if you buy 2 X 3300 mAh you still can use relatively cheap chargers. I have 4 chargers, get my T-Rex 450 packs full quickly.
But the battery costs are still two times as high!

As I got my Quick 50 Pro Nitro yesterday, I think, I will sell my H550.
So I still have the 450 for some quick flying after lunch, and the stinker for the weekend!

cheers from Lake Constance

So al those upgrades are needed to fly some 3D?
I like my t-rex very much, but its all that tiny

So would you recommend bying the t-rex or another heli?
like the hdx500 or the t-rex 600..

I'm really not sure what bigger heli would be best value for price,
the h550 is very attractive, but if it does'nt flies that well stock... :dontknow

Hi,

with the stock H550, I can fly around, do loops, flips, turns. But you need a lot of momentum! I do not dare flying a belgian turn, as the rollrate is'n that good.

It flys much better with carbon blades. You can get some 515s at blattschmied.de for 45 Euros. But I know 3 people who threw their blades around, because the plastic grips where failing! Now my H550 has Carbons and Alu head and grips. But I use the stock motor.

It's OK, but nothing spectacular!

best

Let me explain my point of view!
If you are experienced 3d pilot the trex 450 is great machine!!!!
But if you are trying to learn 3d you need more predictable and stable bird!!! For me Hurricane (after 1year trex450 experience) gave an opportunity to to learn 3d figures much "understandable" It gives you time to think and correct all you movements!!!

Oscar,
I agree with Piranha, the Hurricane helps you to become a better pilot, you get a very positive feed back to control input with plenty of time to correct mistakes. I also fly a 3DX450 and have found that when I go back to flying this machine I seem more aware of what the controls will do.

As to which machine to buy that depends on how deep your pockets are. I have really enjoyed building and flying my hurricane and it is fun trying different types of power combinations on it.

Also it actually possible to run 4 align 2100 extreme packs on this machine 2 pairs in parallell connected in series total weight approx 600 grams, goes like a rocket with the Thunder Tiger OBL 43/11-30 . In this combination it also showed the limitations of my control as I crashed it quite badly, have now reverted to a more sensible power train until my skills are up to running a very hot machine.

To sum up I would say that the hurricane can be docile in stock form which is great for advancing your skills and can easily be upgraded without costing the earth. Most of all this machine is FUN.

I also have a TRex450SE V2 and a Hurricane EP 550. Both of them in pretty much stock form and I will say this, flying the TRex is a constant pay attention kind of thing while flying the Hurricane is much more relaxed and now very enjoyable.

I liken the TRex to my Porsche Boxster, it is very busy. While the Hurricane is sort of like my Prius, smooth, electric and quiet. Both get you from A to B but in the Prius I am in no hurry and arrive very relaxed.

Hi guys
I'm all the way from New Zealand just want some honest reliable advice. I really want to get a larger electric of the Hurricane 550 or lepton ex but I'm not sure which one. I'm doing sport flying and will be moving into 3d soon. I like the idea of using two trex batteries but from what I read it sounds like you need a bit more punch I can't afford a t600 however much I want one but I don't mind paying extra for the lepton, unless its going to end up in the same league as the 600. What are your thoughts should I wait a bit longer and get a 600 or would I be better off on a lepton or hurricane and if so which one. Also what upgrades if any are mandatory in these birds? Currently flying 450trex s just sold a cal 3 -not enough power anymore.
Thanks

I have 87 flights on my Hurricane and I am having a blast with this thing!
It is an inexpensive large helicopter that flies extremely well. The current cost is not much different than an entry level Trex 450. Out of the box it has very smooth and effective cyclic controls and a powerful tail. It is perfect for beginners and advanced pilots learning 3D. Hard core 3D pilots will want more power than the stock motor provides.
The size and stability of this heli make it easy to rapidly improve your skills. My inverted flight abilities have progressed very fast. Next I’ll start working on backwards flight. I am flying a stock machine with a set of Mikado 500mm carbon blades and X-cell 3D paddles (Just $8.00 a set for the paddles and no metal upgrades). Originally I thought perhaps in the fall I would move up to a Trex 600 when I need more power, however between some the OEM and after marked improvements it is starting to look like I’ll just stick with the Hurricane. On a good set of 3s 2100s (The same packs I use in my Trex 450s) I can hover for over 7 minutes, but I normally do light to moderate 3D. I’ll fly for 5 ½ minutes and put between 1.5 to 1.75 mah back into the packs.
While I have certainly enjoyed my 450s they have been sitting on the self since I got my Hurricane.

Would you go lepton ex over a hurricane? It just looks better quality and I don't think I really mind how much bigger it is as long as its bigger than a rex.

abo,

I considered the Lepton, it looks very nice but it is expensive for its size. I wanted something appreciably bigger than the 450 Trex. If I was going spend that much money I would be looking at the Trex 600.

Just my 2 cents

I agree and the 600 is in my mind but for decent batteries in a 600 the cost is double that of the lepton batteries. Sadly I'm stuck, I want to get an electric as I really cant decide on a 50 or 70 size nitro

And don't forget the reapiar parts costs with a Lepton.

Another one to think about is the Quick of Japan EP8. There are several theads in the Electric Helicopter section. You can get them from www.helicopterhobbies.com

abo,

don't forget where / how long it takes to get the spares to NZ. I'm spoilt with the T600 and rchelis being only 2 miles away mewans I can get spares quickly (not required in 6 months of Trex600 ownership). It was a huge $$$ jump to the 600 but for me it was worth it - I would have prefered a 500-size upgrade after the Trex450 but with the cost of getting spares to NZ, I decided it was going to balance out in the end.

I'm still eyeing a 30-sized machine like this one to replace the Trex450. This thread has got me thinking again now...
