View Full Version : YS 50 and MP5--Lots of excess oil but running hot.

It's not over heating but it's right at the limit. I'm getting 112 degrees on the back plate and 207 where the head and block meet and the heli has oil dripping off of it. I mean it is soaked with oil. I'm not an electric guy complaining about a little oil. It has oil running down the inside of the canopy, outside of the canopy, all over the frames, dripping everywhere. It also feels down on power. I've got it in a 600N running right at 2000 headspeed in I2. A friend has one with an OS hyper and it feels like it has considerably more power and a little cooler temps. It has +/-11.5 degrees of pitch and is very easy to bog. I've read posts where people are running +/-12.5 and can't bog them.

The main needle is 1.5 turns out and the low speed is 1 1/8 out and I'm using Wildcat CY 30%. The high speed is at the factory recommended setting for break-in and the low speed is 1/8 on the rich side. It acts like it's running rich except for the temps.

Anyone have any ideas?

FWIW, it doesn't have any fuel leaks.

Have you got a leaking exhaust seal - that would explain the oil and stuff up the mixture settings ?

No, that area is actually pretty dry. Inside and outside the canopy and frames is dripping with oil after 2-3 flights. Some even gets up around the servos on the left side but the exhaust manifold is dry.

Temp wise, I've never had an engine this close to the limit and have so miss. I think I'm going to experiment without the temp gun and tune for performance then see what the temp is.

i think you are loading the engine badly with 2000 headspeed and running it so rich.
If you lean the engine out so it can breathe it will cool off. Think about how powerful the ys must be to give you 2000 and be rich as you have it, Ron

That's what I'm going to try and see what happens.

ummm 208 degrees is actually to cold to run the motor.....

You want about a consistent 230-250..... Measured on the head at the glowplug.

I'm getting the 208* where the head and block meet. Here and the back plate is where I've always taken temp readings but I'll check the glow plug and see what I get there.

If the mixture is too rich. The YS engines will spit fuel out of the top of the carb at high RPM. Been there and seen this several times.

hi, sorry to use your thread but im also using mp5 pipe but using it with OS50hyper and when i run it, it very cool to touch on the back plate. Usual setting for OS egine is 1.5 turns out but i was running 1 and 1/4 turn and its still cool to touch. Anyone has this experience also?

Is the MP5 suppose to run without tunning the engine?
