As the title sayís, are HV servos really required? Couldnít see anything on Mikadoís website or in the manual that says you should use HV only, unless I've missed it.

I noticed in one of the set up threads on here someone is using BLS451ís, however they do state on 7.4v which I didnít think 451ís could take.

No, HV servos are not a requirement. But to say that using (or not using) HV servos makes NO difference in how the machine flies would also be incorrect to say. The answer to the question whether it's OK or not, depends largely on your flying style and skill level.

Here is a post I made in the Which servos in your XXtreme? (http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=384263) thread currently in this section:

"During prototyping, Kyle ran one of his XXtremes with 8717's @ 6V for about 30 flights. Nothing bad happened, and the machine is still capable of some pretty radical 3D using servos powered at 6V.

That said, the added voltage to the servos makes the heli feel more connected Kyle says, especially in elevator tic-tocs, which is a maneuver that really works the servos hard. But I've seen him do elevator tic-tocs on 6V too.

So it's not a "capability" question as much as it's a "how it feels" question.

For the less capable pilots out there like myself (sport pilot), 6V is working just fine."

Hope this sheds some light on the subject for you.
