Hi all, forgive me for such a basic question, but I'm in a bit beyond my experience here. I have a Lepton I will be running off of 4 cells. I will be using the Hyperion Titan 80 esc. The package says that it's a Titan 80 PO. I noticed it does not power up the rx, but I want to use the 4 cell pack to run the radio system, too. Is it possible to do this? At the hobby store, they said this was an all inclusive package, but the rx only powers up if I plug in a seperate battery, like my Trex 600.
Now, the instructions for the ESC are missing, but I have read of other models of the Hyperion 80 amp ESC only being able to use the internal BEC with three cells. Is there such a thing as a BEC that can run off the same battery as my motor? The only ones I know of use a seperate pack.

Yes, there are ESC with high holtage BECs built in. I'm not familiar with the Hyperion line, so can't comment on it's usage. I use a Jazz and a Jeti Spin and both have a switching BEC to use with higher cell LiPo packs. You can either buy one of these ESCs with a switching BEC or just buy an external BEC and add it to your existing setup.

I've used the UBEC, Medusa Research BEC, Arizona regulator, and a few others. FWIW, an external BEC will probbaly be less expensive to add then an ESC with a switching BEC built in. Most external BECs cost about $35 or less. An ESC for the Lepton with a swithing BEC cost $200 or more.

As for the hobby store, if the ESC will not power up your Rx, I'd take it back and tell them they were wrong and you want an ESC that does power up the Rx. If that's really the way you want to go.

Be careful about external switching BECs. I have several ones and none is receiver friendly. After some testing the one included in my Jazz ESC is the better one on this side. The U-Bec is not so bad (but bad anyway), Medusa not good at all and i have another cheap one that i can't use because of stong radio noise. I have a new Hyperion switching BEC not tested yet. They say it's made to be very on on noise question.

You will need to use a external BEC with your Hyperion ESC. I would suggest the Hyperion Switch Mode BEC W/Net Noise Elimination Technology. I had one on my Lepton. I am now using the Hyperion Titan 80A Hi-Pro Brushless 4A Cool SBEC ESC. With this ESC you do not need the external BEC. It was well worth the money.

It can be purchased here:

Also, if you are going to use the Hyperion ESC, get the USB computer programming cord. It makes programming your ESC a snap.

Another note: The ESC and BEC both get soldered to the same deans connector. The BEC does not use a seperate battery.
