View Full Version : Greatings, and a Shuttle Question...

Hi, I'm here from the RC Groups and Wattflyer forums. Nice to find something with Hirobo "support" as well as a world of other Heli related information.

I recently acquired my first Heli, an old Shuttle, possibly an old ZX that had the old style frame and a recoil starter. It did have the full bearing set.

I got through about 7 liters of fuel before my first crash (lack of concentration and a bit of over-confidence...). Even though the damage was minimal (mast, rotors and a few more cracks in the old cabin) I decided to give it a complete going through. The frame was looking faded and funky and some of the tapping screws were pulling out their threads so I bought a new (current) frame and servo mount, new tank to replace my old 230cc fuzzy white job, a new cabin and stickers, skids / mounts and boom braces off a Sceadu that I cut down and mounted in a different location...

That's where my question comes. I don't know what the holes were for but I like the look of the higher mounted braces. I have a small lathe so I made a joining brace that I tapped for the 3mm mounting bolts and mounted it between the braces and frame (see attached photo). The tail boom is solid but I'm a little worried that I may stress the frame with this setup. Any thoughts?

I still have a few things to do before I put it back up in the air but in the meantime, if anyone thinks this is a bad idea please let me know. I don't feel like rebuilding it again because of a stupid cosmetic mod.

I have an ally brace on my Sceadu, it stiffens the frame up and does no harm, check when you hover test for vibrations, if there are any take it off and see if they go away, if all OK keep it on, you have just made your frame stiffer and stronger, which is good.

Looks like a good mod to me

Yeah, I can't see how there would be any problem. I have a shuttle and a sceadu and the sceadu mounts in a similar position with no brace so what you have is prob an improvement.

I have one of those old shuttles by the way, really old with the flybar on top and old style canopy. I like the recoil-start though and I just got another sceadu airframe and will see if I can put the recoil-start OS 30 into the sceadu.

Thanks for the replies! :D

Trillian, I just converted this one from recoil to shaft starter! And I finally put in a new crank and backplate to stop it from oozing all over the place around the shaft that stuck out for the recoil starter.

Yeah I know what you mean about the ooze factor. Well, I just got this evo 50 with shaft start and I have not flown it yet and don't even have a starting shaft or starter but will obviously need to get one. So I will eventually have to have the starting equipment anyway.

Most people would rather use an electric starter but for me living in London it has been largely a matter of trying to keep the transport side as simple as possible. Anyway we shall see. I have two of these pull-start OS 32's still going strong.

Some of the guys at our club use RC Car batteries banded to their starters to avoid hauling around a big lead battery (and no cords to tangle with). We get starters pretty cheap over here and my shaft is a homemade job that seems to work just fine (not as pretty as the anodized ones but hey, I'm not one for bling really).

Flew it today for the first time after the makeover. I was nervous on the sticks for a while so I took a few steps back and started my drills over again. After a few tanks I found I was flying better than before the crash and the heli is much more stable now with the new bits and overhaul. :D
