So far I've settled on the Hurricane 550 XES PRO SE Helicopter Combo from ReadyHeli. To that I'll add a GY401 and S9650. I'm probably going to an XPS 2.4 G receiver and module for my 9C Super. I'm not sure on batteries, but initially I'll use two TP 2100s. Later I'll buy bigger 6S packs.
I fly mild 3d; inverted hovering, sloppy tic-tocs, flips, loops and rolls.
Please Bob and others, recommend:
-Futaba compatible servos
-Motor
-Gears
-Battery
-Blades
I think the idea about Trex600 thrusted tail is a good one, and I'll probably go with it. I like the higher head speeds at the expense of flight times.

Servos.... 9252 of lower cost digital or 9451 for a great servo!
Get a 6V BEC is you use 9451s
Also the Hitec 6975 or 6969's are great too.
Motor... We all want to know this :) Z30-1100 or the new Gaui motor coming out. I still think there are other better choices out there though.
ADRIAN'S GEARS from Readyheli for SURE!
Batts... well 2500's fit well but I get 4 minutes max doing mid level 3D. It will be less if you slap it around like Chris in his video. 3300's are looking like the ticket but you gotta mod the frame to mount them well.
Blades.... CF500mm blades... Readyheli is suppose to have something.
I am using Mikado 500mm CF blades.

Bob,
Did you mean Hitec hs-6965's (instead of 6969)? I like the numbers and price of them for a variety of applications.
Thanks for the response.

Thanks for starting this thread, I'm at the exact same place you are jgunpilot, trying to config a 550 to purchase. :)

I thought one of the selling points was I could use 2 of my Trex 450 batteries. It sounds like 2 of my 2070 TP would only get me about 3 minutes! Ugh Just to be clear, you recommend two FlightPower EVO25-3300 3S? How do you have to modify the frame to get them to fit (I must have missed that video  ). How long of a flight time do you figure for with the 3300s? Just multiplying it out from the 2500's, it still only gets you a bit over 5 minutes?
I'm sure I'll have more questions as I keep reading.
Thanks,
Jason

Might as well go with a 6S pack of 3300's instead of two 3S packs. It easier to keep the cells balanced and its faster to charge unless you have two chargers.

WhirlingBladesOfDeath, I got 5 minutes using FP 2170's with the stock motor! But if you want a rocket those packs wont cut it with a Z30-1100.

With stock motor / esc and a pair of 25c 2200 3s what flight times can i expect for hovering and forward flight?
And the same question for pair of 2500 3s packs?

as I just said above.... STOCK you can get 5 minutes with 2 Trex450 packs and your 25C packs will be fine. I did doing basic stuff.
My videos here are stock with two FP 25C 2170 packs:
http://video.helifreak.com/?subpath=finless/hurricane550&filename=hfirstflight.wmv
http://video.helifreak.com/?subpath=finless/hurricane550&filename=2ndflight.wmv
Both those flights I put in less than 80% in the packs.
It's only the higher power motor and head speed going from 1800 to 2400 will reduce flight time!

OK, so I'll probably need a few 6S1P Evo packs at $250 a whack. At least they're not $300, I guess. That new Gaui motor might be worth waiting for.

The advantage to 2 x 3S is you can use 2 cheap chargers rather than one expensive. I don't own a charger that will do 6S, but I do own several that do 2-5S.
Also less likely to kill both packs in the event of a crash.
It's also easier to mod the frame to take 2 packs... one small plate does it. One big 6S pack is going to take a fair bit of cut and shut on the chassis :)

There is a seperate thread on flight times - they seem to be getting up to 8 mins on stock set=up.
If we do basic FF NO 3D i'm sure we could 'cruise' a little longer.
Bob the video at the end of Nigel Fraser? trextuning say it is a stock set up - Have you seen the video? can that be a stock set-up?
I'm sure a cliche by now - but really, your efforts are GREATLY appreciated!
I'm sure I'd be driving cars by now if not for the great guides!!

I'm at the exact same point; figuring out what to equip the 550 with.
I keep amazing myself that you guys use the s94xx/s95xx servos. I find paying €100 for one servo a bit (no sorry), way too much and was thinking of using s3152 or HS-635HB from which you get 4 for just over €100.
Can anyone make an educated guess on the performance difference between those?
I seriously doubt that spending that much on servos makes that big of a difference. I hardly fly any real 3D (yet?), so my guess is I'll be fine with them.

Hey, is this a good excuse to convert my Trex to 4S? Would 8S2P be a good fit on the 550 with the right motor?

I only fly mild 3D, had a bit over 70 flights with this configuration and no problem what so ever with using s3151 for the cyclic. They work faster than my brain, still slack free and also, i'm having no problems with keeping a few extra € more in my pocket :D

I'm also considering this heli, i want a Rex 600 but lipo cost, ect.... Twas was wondering about the Rex500 but looks like its never gonna happen or be ages away.
So I'm wondering if these packs would be any good for this bird http://www.unitedhobbies.com/unitedhobbies/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4289
They're 15C-25C HXT 6s 4100mah packs weighing in @ 657g.
So are they too heavy for this bird to do good 3D. I have 450 packs but IF i get this heli i want it fast and powerful and dont want to use 2 3's packs for 3 mins of flight.

I have mixed emotions about the Hextronics packs. I have two 3s 1000mah packs and two 3s 2200mah packs. The 1000mah packs absolutely suck. They put out a high initial rate but DUMP fast just like a Ni-Cd battery. 1/3 the flight time that I get with TP 1320 in the same plane. The 2200's have only been flown in the T-Rex in hover and slow circuits. All four packs were "broken in" by doing 5 3 amp discharges on my Triton. Then flown gently for the first two flights. The 1000's suck no matter what. The 2200's have been OK for the low draw flying that I've used them for but I noticed one pack is already puffed. I just ordered two more of these packs too. Too late to cancel as they are in transit. I just wanted something cheap to use for the early flights on the Hurricane. I may be getting what I've paid for. :arggg:

Paul... hard to tell because of the music and I cant hear the head speed.... but yes I think that is stock. REALIZE a pilot with good skills can make a TURD look good... Us average guys cant do that as we dont have the collective management skills...... The tell tail sign for me is watch that there are no HARD neg to pos or visa versa collective pumps like you see on a well powered heli. Tick Tocs are slow not fast pumping... That takes a lot of power to do and you aint seeing that in this video.
So stock... sure.... but again a good pilot like that can make it look great by doing manuvers that show of the cyclic and not the power.

This wasn't my question Bob, I was just posting a link for you to help out whoever asked the question about the video, unless his name is Paul as well  . Looking back through the thread I can't find the original post for the question anyway?

Not asking anything Bob.
 this could get complicated & not that it really matters, but I was just saying that your reply starting "Paul... hard to tell because of the music and I cant hear the head speed" was as if you were answering a question asked by me, ie the "Bob the video at the end of Nigel Fraser? trextuning say it is a stock set up - Have you seen the video? can that be a stock set-up?" question you quoted.
I didn't ask this question, someone else did & I can't see the original asking of this question back in this thread. I just posted a link to the vid the asker of the question was refering too, to help you & him out. By starting your reply "Paul..." it was as if you were answering a question asked by me, which wasn't the case.
Sorry if I've confused you even more now. I should have kept quiet in the first place & just let the asker of the question post a link for you... :)
